Review of Mel Gibson's rank obscenity.
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 11:38 PM by fjc
"The Passion of the Christ" is a misleading title. It should have been "The Passion of the Jews." And the passion of the Jews, according to Mel Gibson, is bloodlust. From the opening scenes and for what seems like an eternal two hours, the film wallows in the pursuit of hatred, extreme violence, and blood by the Jewish priests and people. Pilate is portrayed as a man of conscience who does what he can to halt the madness of the Jews. The devil himself, portrayed, interestingly, as bald, pale, and sexually ambiguous, wanders among the Jews as they inveigh again and again that Jesus be crucified, even after he has practically been skinned alive by the extreme sadism of Roman soldiers. He says as he washes his hands, "it's you who want him crucified, not I." Judas, who hangs himself after having betrayed Jesus, is driven insane by little demon possessed Jewish children no older than 8 or 10 years.

I am stunned, genuinely stunned, that with few exceptions, those so-called "people of faith" who saw this film before its public opening didn't even so much as mentioned the pornographic violence or the overwhelmingly hateful depiction of the Jewish people. Mel Gibson must be certifiably deranged, and so, in my view, is everyone who praises this rank obscenity.

1. I've seen darned little praise of this movie from the regular movie
critics. At best, some seem ambivelent. One review for an ultra-conservative rag, said that many people would be repulsed by the movie, some would shut down all emotion while watching, and only a few would be moved by it.

2. That bad, eh.
Didn't they delete some scenes before it was released? I can only imagine what they were.

5. Uhhhh
really I had a history class last semester, when was the last time you guys studied REAL history and not the friggin "gospels" and that hoo ha. Pontius Pilate may have ordered the crusificiton, but he really left the decision up to the Faracees (rabbis and such). Jesus was preaching against the will of these upper-class Faracees and they saw him as a threat to their power. Most likely, average Jews saw no problem, but the Faracees being the most politically powerful of the bunch were better able to get their way. No doubt was Pontius Pilate a bad person, but the Faracees werent really too much better.

13. "Faracees"
or Pharisees as it was actually spelled, were not "Rabbis and such".

A Rabbi is a teacher. A Pharisee was a Law expert. Similiar to the guys that hand out Kosher certificates today but back then probaly akin to the guys in Suadi Arabia that measure women's skirts.

The Sanhedrin was the Priestly council. Priests still held sway in the Judaism of the time. Rabbis were teachers who taught in Synagogues and schools in the towns and cities of the country. Priests were the big hitters and ran the Temple in Jerusalem. Think of a Cathloic priest as a Rabbis and a Preist as a Bishop or Cardinal.

Pontius Pilate was recalled by Rome for being too enthiusastic in crucifying almost anyone who moved in his jurisdiction. That he is seen as even caring at all about another local death is absurd.

He killed several self proclaimed Messiahs, all by crucifixion.

Romans were the government and were responsible for state sanctioned murder.

As for this Jesus guy, he broke the law as written in the Holy Scripture and the penalty was death. Any Christian that believes the Bible is the Word of God would have called for the same thing.

As far as who killed Jeseus, it was YOU. If you weren't such a sinner then he wouldn't have had to leave heaven and schlep his way across a hot desert hangin out with degenerate fisherman awaiting his grisly demise. So "the Jews" had no more to do with this death than a teenager whacking off.

4. For people who get their "passion" in violence
This movie is soooo delicious for the repressed people who go to see it like it's some worship service or something. All that pornographic violence, but in the name of the LORD.

Oh, the ecstasy. Mike Malloy said some woman had a heart attack during a screening and died.

I think it is pretty damn scary what passes for entertainment and/or enlightenment these days.

7. The crucifixion is a total of 3 sentences
max in any gospel. Yet it warrants 2 hours?

My biggest beef is where's the teachings of Jesus? The Rethugs seem all to happy to glorify the gore, guilt and suffering but never the messages!

9. I can't get overly excited about it - It's a MOVIE, not a documentary . .
.
.
.

The real outrage should be about all the REAL carnage going on over in Iraq in the name of "freedom" and democracy . .

now THAT would be anger and passion well-placed

but alas, a movie gets the front page,

While thousands of innocents are murdered and wounded in the name of ..

what ? . .

nope,

I just can't get all upset over a movie . .
