My dog has started peeing in the house again.
I hope it is the Prednisone he is on and not some kidney/bladder infection. Or the fact that he knows something is about to change (me bringing home a new baby). It just started this week which is also when he started the Prednisone, but he has been on it before and never peed in the house. It is freaking me out because I can't have this big ole dog peeing all over the place when I am trying to be a new mom and all! The hallway carpet already looks ruined. My husband is shampooing it right now.

2. Me too because a 110 lb dog = lots of pee

3. I am kicking because I would like to hear what others think may
be the cause of this.

4. Reason with him. Dogs are pretty open to reason.

5. Very likely the prednisone.
He's likely drinking a LOT more as well, and it's just shooting through him. Most dogs go back to their old habits once they're off the meds. The peeing is the first thing every vet talks about when they script out pred.

How much longer is he on them, and what kind of dog?

6. I will have to look at the prescription. It
breaks down to every other day, so I am not sure as to how many days are left. He is a mix breed. Golden retriever/australian shepard mix. He has been on the Pred many times before due to his allergies, but I guess this time maybe did it for him. He is only 3.

8. What allergies?
Has your vet been able to determine what triggers them? Have you tried changing his food?

9. I have changed his food. He is on venison and potatoes.

He has the worst ear issues. His ears are always bothering him. His allergies always flare up in his ears and his paws.

The vet says he is allergic to lots of foods.

11. How long on that food?
I've had a lot of luck with allergies in our rescue with two different kinds of food (and cooking for one of them for a while).

12. He has been on it for about four or five months now.
It is always the same ear too.

16. Well
I've had great luck with Nature's Recipe Vegetarian (sensitive skin formula) and Nutro's Large Breed Puppy. I know the idea of a vegetarian dog sounds silly, but all but one dog we've ever had come through here with allergies had them cleared up on that food.

18. I will try it. He is on Nature's Recipe as is. He isn't
a picky eater either, so I don't think it will hurt his feelings too bad to go to veggie.

22. Not to intrude but I support that
Corticosteroids cause intense thirst and the poor guy probably can't help himself.

He likely feels a bit ashamed, Shellbeau, so please reassure him.

23. Yeah, he is a sweetie. He does have a doggie door
that he can easily go through though. But I will let it slide. For now anyway.

13. You know I've heard weird things about dogs with pregnant women
I don't know if you smell different to the dog or what....I have a friend that at the end of her pregnancy had to lock the dog out of the bedroom because he kept peeing on the spot of the bed where she slept..
Is your dog peeing in any particular place?

14. All over the damn place. He even did it in front of me.
I was shocked. I halfway expect it from my little dog. She is 10 and does what she damn well pleases. But Hank has never ever done this.

It sounds like attention getting might be part of the issue to do it right in front of you like that.

15. It's probably the Prednisone. I'd call the vet as soon as you can.
I know things like this are the absolute worst when you're just about to have a baby, too. I've been there.

20. Guessing it's the pred.

My kitty was on pred for a long time due to allegies, and had all sorts of bad side effects. And the allergies affected him the same way as your dog, kitty would lick the fur off his legs and tummy and kept getting an ear infection in one ear. Then another vet switched him to Cyclosporine (an allergy med actually made for dogs but my vet doses cats too and has had great luck with it) and Hallelujah! Problems solved! Allergies gone with no apparent side effects. Now he just takes Cyclosporine on an as-needed basis, a few times a year for a few weeks at a time when his allergies act up, and that's all he needs.

Here are a few a links, might want to ask your vet about it:

"... the most recent application of cyclosporine involves the treatment of atopic dermatitis (itchy skin due to airborne allergens). Dogs with this type of allergy are very itchy and completely depend on medications for symptomatic relief. Previously corticosteroids such as prednisone ... have been used to control itching but long term use has been problematic due to side effects. The release of oral cyclosporine for this use may spare many dogs some unpleasant hormonal side effects."

Good luck!
