1983 and '84 were decent years for popular music, but 1985 more than made up for it by bursting at the seams with godawful dreck! Check these titles out and see if you don't agree.

My friend and I went to Washington, DC, with our honors history class in early '85. We were there with kids from all over the country, riding and touring around the city on a bus. Well, we were led by these horrid college students who were interning, and they actually tried to make us sing that damn song on the bus! Of course my friend and I refused to do any such thing, and they threatened to send us back to Seattle! We got in worse trouble after skipping the seminar with the Defense Department and going to the National Gallery of Art instead.

So, a long and convoluted memory involving that horrid song.

Oh, that was a weird, weird week.

1984 was the year of Springsteen's "Born in the USA", which, incredibly, doesn't appear to have produced any #1 hits. I had that album (yes, vinyl LP!!!) on heavy rotation on my turntable all summer. Also a lot of other good stuff - John Mellencamp's first truly great album, and lesser known gems like Hanoi Rocks and Talk Talk. Unfortunately the #1 hits are what stand out in memory about that year...
