Poll question: Worst NUMBER 1 HIT of the mid-1980s?

1983 and '84 were decent years for popular music, but 1985 more than made up for it by bursting at the seams with godawful dreck! Check these titles out and see if you don't agree.

2. Although 'All of the Above" could have been my answer,
I just had to vote for "We Are the World" because it had a higher sickening quotient than the rest.

11. Yeah, me too
My friend and I went to Washington, DC, with our honors history class in early '85. We were there with kids from all over the country, riding and touring around the city on a bus. Well, we were led by these horrid college students who were interning, and they actually tried to make us sing that damn song on the bus! Of course my friend and I refused to do any such thing, and they threatened to send us back to Seattle! We got in worse trouble after skipping the seminar with the Defense Department and going to the National Gallery of Art instead.

So, a long and convoluted memory involving that horrid song.

Oh, that was a weird, weird week.

3. waaah, I can't choose just one!
Went with "We Built this City", since that was the most annoying, but it was close.

4. Hmm
I voted for REO Speedwagon, but I'm going to propose "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight" by Cutting Crew.

Best #1? "Take on Me" by A-Ha obviously.

12. Agree about "Take On Me"
and "Broken Wings" and "Money for Nothing" were good too.

1985 had its moments.

9. 'Red Octopus' was a good Starship album.
Maybe the only good one. Once Marty Balin bailed and Grace stopped sleeping with the band they kinda, ahem, petered out.

10. 1984 was just as bad as '85 IMHO
Here's a list

"Like a Virgin" - Madonna
"Jump" - Van Halen
"Footloose" - Kenny Loggins
"Against All Odds" - Phil Collins
"I Just Called To Say I Love You" - Stevie Wonder
"Ghostbusters" - Ray Parker Jr
"Karma Chameleon" - Culture Club
"Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" - Wham
"Hello" - Lionel Ritchie
"Time After Time" - Cyndi Lauper
"Missing You" - John Waite
"Caribbean Queen" - Billy Ocean

:puke:

1986, 87, and 88 actually had some good stuff, for a change.

Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 10:17 PM by NightTrain
Some of the best songs of '84 were not number ones, sadly!

18. Good point
1984 was the year of Springsteen's "Born in the USA", which, incredibly, doesn't appear to have produced any #1 hits. I had that album (yes, vinyl LP!!!) on heavy rotation on my turntable all summer. Also a lot of other good stuff - John Mellencamp's first truly great album, and lesser known gems like Hanoi Rocks and Talk Talk. Unfortunately the #1 hits are what stand out in memory about that year...

16. As a Canadian, I had to vote for "Bryan Adams"
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 10:33 PM by CanuckAmok
He's a national embarrasment.

But I think John Parr's song is worse.

19. Speaking of Bryan Adams
That 1979 disco single of his in hideous falsetto...what's it called..."Let's Get Dancing"?

That song has got to be heard to be believed. I think even Bryan Adams has disowned it.

17. I personally loved 1986's "Two Of Hearts"
I--I-I-I-I-I-----need you. I----I-I-I-I need-you.
