My sister got dumped tonight because...
she is an atheist! Of course the guy who did the dumping is a hard partying frat boy and has never even mentioned church etc. until today. His parents were coming to town and he thought it would be nice if she went to church with them, when she told him her beliefs (or lack thereof) he told her "I'm sorry, I just can't be with someone who is not saved". :wtf: Anyway, she and I were just coming up with things she could have said (had she not been so stunned by his behavior) and we are going to make a list of the top ten and send it to him. I figured you creative people might be able to help us out. So far we have:
1. I'll go to church with you if you come to a goat sacrifice with me (since so many equate atheism
with Satanism)
2. Why are you worried about my eternal soul, we've only been dating for 6 weeks!
3. Oh, I thought you knew I was a Democrat! (again, because he was thrilled with the Palin pick
since she is a christofacist)

It is infuriating, I have never judged someone because they are a religious person, but so many people judge me (my sister, mother, father etc.) because we are not, this is not intended to be a Christian bashing exercise, so please don't take offense :)

thanks,
mcctatas

6. She's young...
If I allow my mind to wander down the dark hallway of "What the fuck was I thinking when I dated that asshole", I might just become a nun (and I'm an atheist aka recovering Catholic)

21. Yay, tell you what..if I really looked back on all the boyfriend
mistakes, I'd be so humiliated. The good thing is that I have always been ornery and a bit too independant. The rule of thumb is to not want to be in or need a relationship unless it's for a good reason!! Your sister will probably figure this out as time goes on.

10. Do your top 10 as a mental exercise, but don't send it to him. He's not worth the bother or drama.
Seriously, why bother?

And, sorry if this sounds crass, but if they slept together, that can be a major emotional factor for most women, whether straight or gay. And the solution is for her to get her head out of her pants and think objectively and realistically.

Tell her to get over the fucking bum. He's an asshole.

15. I have NEVER felt secure with my atheism. I have had to be "in the closet" many times.
My wife knows who I am thankfully, and my kids know.

My wife is not an atheist by the way, she says.

My oldest boy is an atheist I think, but my youngest seems to believe in a God or some Gods.

17. My husband and oldest daughter believe in God/Gods...
as does half of my Catholic family (my parents left the church when I was in HS, left me to make my own decision, and although I know longer truly believe, I sometimes find miracles in every day things), anyway, I feel the same way you do, I try to remain non-committal about religion when asked, and the few times I have just come right out with it people tend to look at me like I just said "I'm a pedophile" It makes me soooooo angry!

16. don't read too much reality into an excuse to break up...
when you can't think of anything else you go with the classic "it's not you, it's me..."

otherwise, as a lame ass excuse you pick something, anything. it could have been her red hair or her height or her show size.

breakup excuses are never real. forget it.

and she is better off for having this shit out of her life...

19. Maybe it is better that it was so early if it was an issue with him
There are people who are generally non judgemental about certain things, like religion in this case, but are in the case when it comes down to who they will marry. At six weeks, they probably weren't really thinking about marriage, but it is good that the relationship is done with before it got to that point. I have known several couples that had issues like this (or politics or certain backgrounds or certain lifestyle differences that they were unwilling to give up) who ended up breaking up after a few years because one of the partners felt that he or she couldn't marry the person for that reason (sometimes family pressure was involved) and that there was a lot of hurt. If she has a problem eventully marrying a Fundamentalist Christian and/or a strong Republican, she should probably do him a favor and dump him early on too.

20. I am glad that you have come to your sister's defense!
I am so tired of the Christian-not Christian shit that seems to determine our fates here. I believe in the separation of Church and State.

Your sister is so much better off without hanging out with some stupid ass frat boy that tries to impress his faux religious shit on her in order to appease his family anyway. Tell her there are better men on her horizon.

I think that you are wonderful for picking up for your sis!

I get aggravated when I get emails from well-meaning friends regarding stupid shit like Obama not saluting the flag, etc, that I just sort of lose it after a while.

As far as Palin--she is just some Repug bitch that they are making way too much of. Go to Snopes.com to get the scoop on her.

XXXOOO

23. I can only echo what all the smart people here
have already posted.

But, it occurred to me that sending your sister a link to this thread might be kind of fun for her - and maybe a little educational?

Send her a nice surprise - a box of candy bars, or something fun - and don't let her think for one second that a "hard-partying frat boy" is any kind of "catch." They're the ones a smart young woman really wants to avoid.

Send her the DVD of "Animal House."

Are the militant ones who mock religion. But then again I couldn't date a religious fundamentalist either. I prefer someone open minded who is respectful of other views unless the other views are pretty extreme.
