Just found out we're being watched at work
Our internet surfing for "objectionable material." This wouldn't include DU, but it might include some of the...um...other sites I went to.

Anyone have any tips? Can IP logs be used against you, or must they find evidence?

1. Stay away from porn and hotmail....
They hates those! They'll probably only use it against you if they want to fire you for some other reason.

3. Yep...I'm just worried that they might use past IP logs
Against me now. If they did a search, they'd find nothing...but if they went over the IP logs with a fine toothed comb, they might just come up with something.

I worked in IT before - so I know how much of a pain in the ass it is to even look for much more serious offenses like leaks. Needle in the haystack principle.

But the question is will they do it?

4. Could also try Anonymizer.com
www.Anonymizer.com

Of course many admins block this site too...

6. Don't look at anything that is the least bit compromising...
with the right setup, the watcher can see exactly what you see, as you see it. So, pretend that your mom is standing right behind you, because that's what it's like.

Some workplaces care what you watch, for obvious reasons, and they also care HOW LONG you surf -- you're there to work, right? That's the theory, anyway. So most watchers log what you watch, and then monitor how much time you spend not doing official work.

7. We can see everything here
One of my hats is tech. We get logs of every site visited, how long, whether it was active vs idle, transfer totals, everything.

8. Right - but with 2000+ employees how much do you monitor past logs?
That's what I'm worried about. I worked in IT and could check out any client's connection stats at any time. But with being short staffed, and constantly taking on new jobs since such-and-such got laid off, there just wasn't time.

Would they go through past logs, or are they going to just do a nice sample of current?

Or, should I just stick a fork in me now?

11. Oh - I see.
Yes, we only check them when someone rats on someone else.

We used to have someone who would go through a sampling, but that fell off a long time ago.

9. Just don't go onto any job-searching sites.
They are on the lookout for that.

12. By the by....
my coworker says it's a software program that watches what we're surfing and decides it's unacceptable or not. I recently went to a conspiracy link from from DU and when I tried to back up to a page I'd just read, I got the company warning page instead! In those few seconds.

While it's a relief to know it might not be human eyes that see where I used to surf at work when I was stupid (mainly personals sites, no porn--although sometimes folks would include naughty pictures), as well as those places I go now that I'm just a little dull.
