Jarritos, have you tried it? Did you like it?
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 09:50 AM by Tuesday Afternoon

Jarritos is a very popular brand of soft drink in Mexico. Jarritos was started by Don Francisco "El Güero" Hill in 1950. Jarritos is made in fruit flavors and is less carbonated than soft drinks made in the United States or Canada. Many Jarritos flavors are naturally flavored. The word jarrito means "little jug" in Spanish and refers to the Mexican tradition of drinking water and other drinks in clay pottery jugs. In 1989, the first importation of Jarritos to retail stores in the U.S. began; by 1997, Jarritos became the most popular soft drink in the U.S. among Latino consumers. The Jarritos brand is currently owned by the AGA Group, a large independent-bottling conglomerate based in Guadalajara, Jalisco, although its also produced and distributed in some areas of Mexico by The Pepsi Bottling Group and by Cott.

1. Ha. No, but I'm addicted to Topo Chico.
That's Mexican mineral water. And it's SUPER carbonated. But tasty! And way cheaper than other kinds of mineral water.

And IIRC it's made with sugar and not HFCS.

Ingredients

Mandarin Jarritos contains does not contain a long list of unknown ingredients that require a dictionary to define what they are. The ingredients include carbonated water, sugar, citric acid, natural flavour, sodium benzoate (as a preservative) yellow 6 and red 40.

11. We did a taste testing of those for my kid's Cinco de Mayo Party.
The kids were not into the Tamarind flavor at all, but the rest went over pretty well. Certainly better than some of the candies we presented.

14. We were looking for ways to expose them to new stuff.
We live in a rural area without a huge amount of cultural diversity. One thing my husband and I do to overcome the "redneck factor" (as we call it) is to do one party per year for our daughter's class at school for a holiday not usually celebrated around here. We've done a couple of pretty lame ones like St Paddy's Day (scared hell out of the teacher with a discussion about the Orange men, but that is for a different day...) but usually the parties are pretty fun.

We take in decorations, food, drinks, and crafts/activities that are appropriate/unique to the holiday and the culture it comes out of and we try and open these kids' eyes to life outside Central Illinois. The teachers seem to get into it--they have pretty much loved the idea of an educational party. I even send in lesson material for the teacher to use (if they choose to) stuff like worksheets, word searches, or even crossword puzzles. I have even provided maps when needed.

Things I have learned over the years:

You will not be terribly successful teaching a classroom full of kids how to use chopsticks in a 15 minute time period.

Foods that are outside the usual scale of flavors can be a real challenge--so you have look for the commonalities. CANDIED anything is good. CANDIED Ginger, for example. CANDIED Tamarind is borderline acceptable. They may not be thrilled but they will try it at least...

Send home goodie bags of candies or other treats that are tied to that culture. We hit the local Mexican Grocery for Cinco De Mayo and the local Asian grocery for Chinese New Year. You CAN get by with giving them sugar but you have to send it home with them.

IF you do a soda pop tasting, do NOT give more than a tiny dixie cup of soda per flavor. Literally, it needs to be like a wine tasting unless you plan to run them to death immediately after (which carries its own risks...)

A Pinata is a REALLY bad plan for first graders. Might be ok when they get older but do NOT ever give a kid that age a weapon.

Kids love little keepsakes from other places. We gave little red envelopes with replica antique Chinese coins in them for Chinese New Year (the Hong Bao) and the kids STILL talk about that several years later.

No teacher I have met yet is willing to let us do a Middle Eastern or Muslim theme party. Breaks my heart and I am hoping for just ONE that has the stones to let me do it. They ALWAYS choose the "Safe" holidays and it breaks my heart.

25. Jarritos is OK, but I'd rather drink Mexican Coke
Which is the same thing that used to be in this country before they fucked it all up in 1985 with the "New Coke" scam and the High Fructose Corn Syrup bait & switch.
