3. I own 2 Nikons so I'd say yes.
I'm not a fan of point and shoots, I like more control over what I snap.

7. Best Buy has the Canon Rebel EOS
on sale for 494.00 right now. That is the 8 mp one, not the 12. Not sure how many the Nikon D40 you have priced is.

If you go into flicker and search for photos taken with the D40 you will be impressed.

6. I have the D40X
and I love it. easy to use, the menu system is simple, and it takes fantastic photos. Go for it, you won't regret it. Are you getting the package with the two lenses?

Here's a couple photos I've taken with this camera:

OK, maybe Canon, Nikon, and Olympus all have some very good lenses. Maybe I'm just a bit biased because I have an Olympus E-1 and a couple of great weather-sealed lenses.

19. What can I say, I'm an Oly-boy?
When I had film cameras, they were Nikons, and I have absolutely nothing against the Nikon dSLRs. If I were to get something other than Olympus, it probably would be a Nikon.

17. It's a great choice for an entry-level dSLR
It's not the newest, latest, greatest, fastest, highest resolution camera, but 6Mp can still make great images, it's all in the person behind the lens. Speaking of lenses, the kit lens may serve you for a while, but plan on buying more in the future!

If you can swing the extra $$$, the newer D60 might be worth looking into, if you can't, enjoy the D40!

18. Most of the reviews I read said that the D40 was actually better than the D60...
...in many respects. Some of the useful features of the D40 were actually dropped on the more expensive model. Sure, the D60 has more megapixels in its CCD, but some reviewers felt this actually degraded picture quality vs the D40, since the extra sensors were crammed into the same-sized chip, increasing the risk of cross-interference.

In the end, I got a D40 for my wife, and she loves it. Pretty much its only weakness is that it doesn't do autobracketing (which cameras like the Canon Rebel do), but that's a pretty minor gripe in an otherwise brilliant camera.

24. Yes, save the big bucks for the lens!
My D70 will last me so long as USB ports exist, and I've found resolutions much above 6mp a pain in the ass to edit, without much improvement in image quality. Good lenses, on the other hand, are crucial to getting the right shot and will last a lifetime, especially in the Nikon family.

You won't be sorry. You can buy Vibration Reduction lenses that allow you to take pictures up to a second in exposure time without a tripod or a blur.

of my primary zoom. I was so intent on a f/2.8 constant, I neglected to realize how its weight would cause hand shake at longer focal lengths. It's ruined some otherwise great shots. GRRRRRR.....

21. No
digital camera technology is changing so quickly and advancing so rapidly that spending over $200-$250 is really a waste, because your $450 camera will be outdated by Halloween and half price in less than a year... Probably better to spend $200-$250 now, and then by that camera in another year or so

most of which will remain viable so long as USB ports do. Even if USB ports one day become obsolete, I'll keep my current Mac as my D70 processor, since there's nothing inferior about the image quality they're able to produce together.

27. Which dSLRs sell for less than $250?
Quite simple, the D40, or any of the entry-level dSLRs being sold today blow away point-and-shoot cameras in image quality and camera capabilities. They're certainly less portable, but whenever I use a P&S, I'm disappointed.

22. I love my D70
with 6.5 pixels. Bought it two years ago. Tack-sharp when I shoot with RAW files, up to 3x4 foot images. Some higher-resolution DSLRs produce such large files, they're impractical to edit.

I've since invested heavily in lenses, in which Nikon maintains the best record on generation-to-generation compatibility.

Go for it - the world of DSLRs is a whole new and wondrous one if you've only known film or point and shoots.

31. It's a great camera, but one small problem...
is that it's Nikon's entry level digital SLR and so doesn't autofocus with most Nikon lenses. There are a few other functions it doesn't handle very well with older lenses.

This won't be a problem for you if you don't plan on using any of the hundreds of other Nikon lenses out there and just use the ones with the two lens package you can get.

(and if you can find a D40X or D60 at anything close to the same price-- they've got a few more features and higher resolution)
