Question for Historians Or People in the Know about the G.I. Bill
And it's quite a simple one : what does G.I. stand for ? A google found me the G.I. Bill of rights but no explanation of G.I. in itself.

My sister is studying international politics & relations, and she doesn't know. I'm trying to impress her with my relations on this board. *ahem*

Thanks in advance !!

look further down the list at the page you linked to - General Infantry is also there, although less common.

5. a good guess - I thought it must be something so evident
no one bothers to explain it. General Infantry does the trick. But I see below there are other options :P

I am also thinking of G.I. Joe used meaning "typical soldier" -> fits with the "general" infantry.

Thanks for the guess

2. I always thought it was "Government Issue"...
...G.I. Bill is slang, though. It has an actual formal name: The Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944. :-)

7. thanks for the confirmation
would you happen to know from what background it originated ? Did they say "G.I. gear" - "G.I. food packs" etc ?

10. OTOH
I was in the Navy. We were never called GIs nor did we use the phrase that I can recall.
