So is it proper to put the ketchup and mustard on top of the sauerkraut
or should it go on top of the hot dog, then the kraut on top of the ketchup and mustard?

I don't know many guys named Al, but if I did I'm sure they would agree with me that ketchup with sauerkraut is an abomination

7. Kraut is always on top.
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 02:49 PM by MaggieSwanson
Otherwise the ketchup and mustard will slide around...

Edited to add:

Out of curiousity, do you prefer sauerkraut with or sans caraway seeds?

9. See, now we finally get a real answer!
So you're saying the fluid viscosity of the sauerkraut will effect the performance of the dog? Interesting...I'm sure the structural integrity of the bun will factor in somehow.

19. The dog's performance is irrelevent ...
'tis the regulation of the condiments that is in question.

Now, if said bun is large enough to encompass everything, then it's a moot point. But if that is the case then you don't have enough sauerkraut piled on! :P

11. No.
1) It is not proper to put mustard on anything. Ever. :puke:

2) Ketchup is best employed as a dipping sauce for fries. Any other use is suspect at best.

22. condiments first, kraut last
Kraut is an unstable base for condiments. It's okay if a thread or two of kraut escapes, but you DON'T want it to be carrying a stream of mustard onto your shirt. Kraut on TOP of condiments actually stabilizes condiments and reduces leakage.

and a stripe of mustard down one side of the dog, a stripe of ketchup down the other - relish down the middle.

30. I hadn't thought of it that way
and I wish I hadn't been invited to do so. But, actually, kraut has already absorbed its capacity in brine before in goes on top of the mustard. The mustard underneath remains intact in its liquidity. So, no, not quite the right analogy.

you NEVER under ANY circumstance put Ketchup on a dog with kraut!!! I can't even imagine someone saying it!

Dog, mustard, kraut. That's it.

27. Mustard is fine. If you want ketchup on your hot dog, as Royko said,
that's your business. If you want to put hair and toenail clippings on it, that's your business too.

33. Mustard is fine, Ketchup has sugar in it and does not go good with the sour Kraut
Kraut should be eaten with salt, not sugar so for get the Ketchup
