Worst Remakes of Old Songs?
My vote (and I'd vote 50 times for this one!)

Limp Bizkit's version of "Behind Blue Eyes"

:puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

Dishonorable mention goes to...

Lenny Kravitz's version of "American Woman"

:puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

In BOTH cases, not only are the remakers not worthy to polsih the boots of the original artists, but in both cases the songs are pathetically weak compared to the originals.

Sub-par cover of a shitty song.

Otherwise, I like Helmet.

6. Drift away
redone my some singer I can't name. If they insist a redoing songs they should attempt to do it better. But all time, I have to say it was Merle Haggard in the early 80's doing "Baker Street".

I collect StH covers, but I haven't heard that one. My favorite is by Rolf Harris.

10. Anyone here heard of an album called "Starways to Heaven"?
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 10:15 AM by bif
It's a whole album full of remakes of this song. There's one with a full blown symphony orchestra and one done by an opera singer. Wow! It's pretty bad. Go to allmusic.com and do a search for it. The description is so bad it almost sounds like it's worth ordering.

16. I've got a couple of songs off of that...
Recorded off the Dr. Demento show, and I have to say, I prefer them to the original just because I'm sick and tired of the original and how it's hyped as some great rock anthem. Rolf Harris' version (he's the one who recorded "Tie Me Kangaroo Down") has the best version, but the one where they use the words to the theme from Gilligan's Island is good too.

19. Wow ...
Did they put Frank Zappa's 1988 verson of this song.

Picture this ... It is kind of a reggae version with the horn section doing the guitar solo part.

Cheers

13. Oh, I disagree on Lenny...I hated the original (can't stand Burton
Cummings' voice, not sure why) but I loved the song itself, so Lenny's version was the berries with me.
The remake I hated was Van Halen doing The Kinks' "You Really Got Me."
Travesty. Love Eddie, but that sucked.

But I do agree with you that VH doing the Kinks was not good, I can't put it above (or below, as the case may be) my two nominees.

How did this get made? Who thought it was a great idea? Why was this necessary? Does Pat Boone worship Satan now?

22. Any Cover That's Just Like The Original
Example: Great White doing Ian Hunter's "Once Bitten Twice Shy". They added ZERO to the song. Just took the original and redid it, except for a different guitar solo. Big Deal!

I always feel like a cover should take the song to a different place than where it's already been. If it doesn't, i don't wanna hear it!

24. As always, the Professor with a nice point!
I agree, but it should be a happy medium. Remakes which preserve merely a tiny core of the old song while utterly changing it ae too far in the other direction.

Moderation in all things, my friend.

26. I Can See That
I'd rather see more change then less, but the spirit of the song should not change. (IOW, don't do a heavy metal version of Heart of Gold.)

But, the one qualifier i would have, is that the musicianship should be very high, so the new direction is extremely well executed. Craftmanship and creativity is served that way.
The Professor

36. De gustabus non disputandum est
Though I largely agree.

Luckily "House of the Rising Sun" in the original had a driving beat that lent itself very well indeed to the "heavy-metal" Johnson remake.
