4. Excellent! Let's mock the Pope on Ash Wednesday...
No Catholics can possibly be offended. :eyes:

Way to demonstrate that "tolerance" and "big tent" mantra we're all so proud of.

I've never hidden a thread before - first time for everything I guess.

7. Some may be offended
But many see the Pope as a wise, rich, noble yet eccentric uncle that is not above a little fun. (Catholics are not easily pigeon-holed though lately they seem to be on a Fundi slide, maybe as part of the Sex Abuse Scandal and reaction to world events.)

11. The timing sucks...
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 10:09 AM by Richardo
...is my point. We read all kinds of symbolism into how Bush times his pronouncements (anti affirmative action on MLK's Birthday, for example) yet the sensitivities of our religious members is given short shrift in the name of fun.

If this had appeared yesterday, or tomorrow, I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought, but as it is I'm sitting at work with ashes on my forehead and as a result, I'm a tad more aware today.

I'm not above a good-natured jab or two at the Vatican, but read some of the captions here - many are not good natured, and the anti-Catholic broad brush is in full use by some...as if we're some kind of idiots being blindly hoodwinked instead of thinking beings who give a lot of thought to our faith and are in many case conflicted about the moral and political ramifications of the church's tenets, and are seeking ways to resolve our spiritual and political lives.

(OK - well THAT turned into a rant.)

as Ash Wednesday.

The $70 million is a hot hot story because it's existence has been officially denied since June 1982

RWers will (I expect) make that into another form of a cross, claim he is in handcuffs, and tie it into the hippie-Manson thing.

I won't be surprised.

23. Thank goodness for that! (miss your foundation garment on the
sig line....must be a laundry line opportunist thief about....)

I had some time for Sen Kerry when he was involved in getting BCCI closed down and Bob Morgethau finally did the biz.

I have since reviewed the situation. Theresa Heinz Kerry sucks, worse than Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger.

I guess the catholic child abuse scandal must be hurting pretty bad for the catholic dems to start bankrolling someone like Kerry.

Never forget: Al Gore dumped Kerry as a potential running mate in 2000. Incase you wondered why Lieberman got the nod....

For purposes of caption: Pope thinks he (the idea of Christ's rep. on earth) & the entire church is a crock and is amazed that anyone buys it.

Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 10:34 AM by StClone
Do you have a problem with Jesus's words and works outside the Church? Some, me included, are inclinde to believe JC would fit in here at DU (well we'd have to tone it down a bit). What do you think Christ would post?

15. And what would be his sig name????
Remember that campaign last year: "What Would Jesus Drive?"

I guess JC would be very cross about being mis-quoted and plagiarised and none too happy about some of the crap movies made about him, not to mention the crummy pictures that sell for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ at auction reputedly depicting him.

But I guess his biggest rant would be at those who have made so much money out of the mythology that made him popular in the first place.

Question: You think JC would choose the DU over Freeper Republic for his postings?

19. I like him too.
I think he might take me aside and smack me down for my disrespectful comment about another human being (i.e., Karel the Pope) and the ultra-faithful of that church, who hang on the pope's words. I admit that I have a problem with bible-worshipers and those who worship figureheads rather than just God (that is, among those who choose to worship any deity).

I don't know what he'd post, if anything. I rather see him lurking here, but trying to be reasonable with people over on FR and trying not to get banned. Seriously.

I have no problem with the legacy Christ left. I just wish more folks who claim his name would try to emulate him.

I apologize for having offended you.

Any other questions? Want to discuss it more?
