1. That RPM order indicator
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 12:13 PM by Turbineguy
Reminds me of my time on the Unrep Tanker, Passumpsic. We usually did unreps at around 62 RPM. You had to bring the engines (steam, geared turbines) to that speed, stabilize the entire plant and then the carrier or whoever would come alongside.

No pictures though.

3. I toured the HMS Belfast in 2000
Alas, that was two years before my digicam.

The flagship of the 10th Cruiser Squadron in which capacity she provided cover for Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union.

7. That brings back memories.
The HMS Belfast was right outside my office window when I worked at the Cottons Center near London Bridge. Even 55 years on from its glory days, it is still a formidable-looking piece of equipment. Well worth touring, as well (certainly much more interesting than the hokey "London Dungeon" nearby).

I will not stand for any thread-jacking

The propulsion control section of the Transvaal Castle's engine room, taken shortly before the ship was broken up.

Good enough?

I took it straight from the ship's commemorative website. You don't think I drew it by hand, do you?

18. I passed on the dungeon
The Belfast floating museum is notable in that it does allow access to the engine room as well as the equally impressive machine shop.

9. Sorry. I threw most of my Navy pictures away.
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 04:13 PM by two gun sid
One of our more artistic MM's painted a nude Tonya Roberts on our throttleboard after she had done a spread in Playboy. The Old Man came down to main control and had a fit. He made the MM's paint over that beautiful piece of art. Goddamn shame, really.

Flank speed ahead, for this post! Make turns for 30 knots.

16. Oh yeah, it's gonna make it to fifty.
My ship had a crew website and I think there was a picture of M Division around the throttleboard I can look it up if you like. I do have one picture of the IC shop with me in it and a big bag of weed on top of the gyro. Would that count?

I should blackout my face 'cause the fuckin' Nav don't take kindly to people using their Capital Ships to smuggle dope. That a Sperry-Rand gyro the pack of Marlboro's is sitting on. You can just make out the dope in plastic bags I got from a mess crank.
