1. Have you tried the "clumping" type litter?
The pee clumps up and can be removed easily. Really no smell left behind, of course I had only one cat.

2. I use clumping litter for my two cats
It works well..the pee smell is not at all bad. Scooping, although you have to do it frequently, is not that bad.

3. We have three and it can be trying. I've resorted to Tidy Cats Multiple
Cats--

It clumps, and tends to retain freshness whereas others we've found just spreads the stink.

We're in Florida, so humidity is a factor, but Tidy Cats works best with us.

Sorry if it's not much help, but this works best.

5. Change the brand of litter you're using
I have two neutered males and the litterbox does not smell.
Are your cats neutered or spayed? The urine of intact animals is considerable smellier than urine of neutered/spayed animals.

7. Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Unscented

Works really well as a clumping litter. I never have a problem with cat pee smell. I keep the box clean and remove the clumps as soon as I know she's used the box.

8. buy clumping litter. There are some 'green' ones out there,
but they have a tendency to be too finely ground so I mix Feline Pine in with Tidy Cat. I have 7 cats, 8 litterboxes, and I scoop twice a day, but I only do a full clean/removal of litter/scour the box, etc., maybe once every 6 months. There is no smell - but probably because I scoop frequently (morning and night). And the cats have never, ever gone outside of their box, so they all are pretty happy with the situation (cats unhappy with their litterboxes can make very loud statements by doing their business anywhere but the box).

I used to use nonclumping litter and was forever scrubbing boxes. Clumping is far, far, far superior; Tidy Cats is the only non-environmentally-friendly product I'll use because it makes my life so very much easier.

9. Here's the method I've been using for many years.
Edited on Sat Aug-23-08 03:05 PM by sammythecat
-- Use ONLY clumping litter. Anything else is a total waste of time and money.

-- Get yourself a shitbox. I tore the top of an empty box of clumping litter. I keep the tools and the shit in that box.

-- Get a small "fireplace" type shovel, with a flat bottom and a square front. It's ideal for getting under the clumps and lifting them up.

-- Get a strainer type shovel. The typical ones sold everywhere.

-- It's also not a bad idea to have more than one litter box.

Every day, sometimes twice, I take my shitbox and tools and go to work for maybe 2 or 3 minutes. Use the fireplace shovel to lift up the clump, then drop it into the "strainer" shovel, wiggle it a bit so the good stuff falls back in the litter box and then drop the bad stuff into the shitbox.

I live in the country, so I can take the shitbox to the end of the yard and give the contents a whip into the woods. Yay! Shit all gone. If I couldn't do that I'd place it into a garbage bag with loosely tied knot that's easy to open and re-tie.

With this method you will remove 98% of the bad stuff and only have to replace the same volume with new litter. It's very economical and easy. Clean litter boxes = happy cats and happy people. You can go weeks and weeks before you'll decide you need to completely change the litter.

I'll say again that even with just two cats it's not a bad idea to have more than one litter-box. They can be side by side. It just prevents one from being overwhelmed at times and gives a better chance (more time) for the litter to clump hard for easy removal.

11. Try the crystal litters...
This is the greatest litter invented and it really absorbs the smells. My cats LOVE it! We have different litter boxes in the house and they always prefer the litter box with the crystals. It is more expensive but worth it and with 2 cats you only need to change it once or twice a month. No kidding.

22. those crystals are silica, aren't they?
Even though they are crystals, they are bound to produce some fine particles and to change it you have to get your head right down near it. I'm thinking of how awful silicosis is so I am afraid to take that risk, for me or for my cats. Plus my vet says the crystals are hard on kitty feet. My neighbor did think it was great though she eventually switched to clumping stuff.

14. All of the above....but beware of dust.
The clumping litter is a great discovery and, as I stated above, it's the only kind to use. However, some of the cheaper, economy brands raise a big cloud of dust when you pour it into the litter box. If you have to use the cheap stuff wear a simple dust mask.

15. god, I do it 2 or 3 times a day
If it smells to you, imagine what those ammonia fumes are doing to your poor kitties' eyes. I guarantee you that if you don't keep it up they will eventually find other places in your home to go, and once they start that, you can't easily get them back to the litterbox by cleaning up the premises. I suggest you clean it every day. Believe me, a cat in litter rebellion will make your life hell.

18. I have a crazy layer method that works for my two smelleh kittehs. Starting with the bottom layer:
1) Cat deodorant powder
2) Cedar shavings
3) Cat deodorant powder
4) Clumping or regular clay
5) cat deodorant powder
6) Cedar shavings or feline pine
7) Cat deodorant powder again

19. 3 days? madon. for my one kitty it requires at least a once -a-day...
i had two kitties once. and i scooped their litter twice a day when i fed them. kitties are amazing in the amounts of poop and pee they can generate in a 24 hour period.

3 days?

in that time there would be more "clump" than "litter" in my box.

but i bow to anyone that can scoop in three days.

wow...

20. no...i scoop daily. I change the ENTIRE contents 2/3 days
I use liners so every 2/3 days I take the liner and all, throw it away and wash out the box then put fresh litter in again.

I use a little scoop and clean it out daily. I put fresh litter in 2/3 days

25. doesn't the clumping litter specifically say to not use a liner? It interferes with
the clumping somehow.

Maybe I am confusing with crystal litter, but I think I am right on this

21. do you rinse the litterbox?
Some people just dump and refill. I rinse it with hot water and a bit of liquid hand soap. Then I spritz it with febreze. If I can, I put it out on the sunny porch to air dry. Then I pour in Fresh Step litter.

We have five cats. 'Nuff said.

26. four cats. five boxes. and some spare ones so I can rinse and sun dry as needed
my idiot boys tend to prefer the box nearest the door, and move progressively down the row of boxes so if I am gone or something, there will be a full box, a less full box, a used box, a slightly used box and and an untouched box.

29. I scoop every 2 hours round the clock
and completely empty and scour the boxes daily. After about 5 days I burn the boxes and buy new ones. Of course I wear a hazmat uniform while tending the boxes, but I still feel better if I bathe in a tub with 2 parts water and 1 part bleach once or twice a day.

Soon I will have completed the building of a concrete bunker separate from the house to contain the litter boxes. I can't wait! It's going to have forced air circulation and a stainless steel sprinkler system to decontaminate the bunker with super-heated steam every day while I'm boiling the litter boxes.

31. 4 cats, 2 boxes
Scooped every morning, and every night. Emptied and washed with a commercial-grade sanitizer that kills bacteria, fungus, and virii, every third day.

Dust-free clumping litter with pine shavings lining the bottom.

No smells. And the cats love a clean litter box

32. Three cats, four boxes, one window fan
Can't use the clumping litter because one of our females is prone to urinary tract infections from the dust, so we just use regular clay litter...the 20 lb. bag. Three of the four boxes are in a small room upstairs--I think it was once a trunk room, because it's too small to be a bedroom and has no closet, but it does have a window, so we have one of those dual fans that fits in the window, both rotors set on "out". Even when our part-Persian neurotic pisspot poops on the sheet of plastic I keep under the boxes, you can't smell it--not even in the hallway just outside the room.

I change all the boxes once a week (including spraying 'em down), the night before garbage day. Everything goes into a giant contractor-grade garbage bag. When I haul that black bag down the stairs, over my shoulder, I look like a reaaaalllyyy evil Santa.
