28. Diagnosed Asperger's Syndrome

by both a former therapist and a psychiatrist. It's an autism spectrum disorder on the high end of the scale. I'm academically brilliant (U of MN summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Harvard Law, same class as Michelle Obama, though I didn't know her in school) but I have the social intuition of a potato and don't understand nonverbal communication at all and can't make direct eye contact with anyone but my cat.

The best way to imagine a bright Aspie is to think of Mr Spock or Data from Star Trek. We look human but our responses are not "normal." Most people kind of flip out subconsciously to Aspies. We make them uneasy and they don't even know why.

I do not have the social skills to navigate situations where i don't know people unless I know beforehand that there's a common interest (music, politics, high end audio) and have no clue how to read people. In those situations I keep conversation focused on the common interest and sometimes friendship develops out of that common interest.

but I made a catastrophic career choice. Law is an intensely social profession and I am fundamentally an asocial, though not antisocial person. Was blackballed by a partner at the first firm I worked at after graduating, wound up working in a science fiction bookstore for $5/hour. Lost my car and my credit was ruined.

Wound up clerking for a state judge and getting a gig as a contract attorney at a good firm, but they kept the other contract atty, who I was technically better than, because he was a "good guy" who was very social and involved. I did my job, kept my mouth shut and went home every night. Bounced around a lot since then; last gig was clerking for another judge back in 2005. Unemployed since then. Heavy duty period of severe depression which went untreated for several months. Last year I got on general assistance and foodstamps, and I am still on them, as well as medical assistance. So I have my meds, which are effective, but my therapist, whom I really liked, went into private practice a couple of months ago and I can't afford her.

Lost my car a year ago, and was foreclosed out of my house early this year. I would be homeless were it not for the kindness and generosity of several friends and a cousin, all of whom are quite well off.

Trying sporadically to find a job, but it's tough when you're older and have a terrible work history. I don't even understand the acronyms in most job ads and my training is so specific - law school sharpens the mind by narrowing it - that it's very difficult. I am a terrible interview and most places want to hire "people persons", which I am definitely not. I couldn't sell dollar bills for a quarter. Even tried to get a staff job with the state Dems in '06 with the help of a recommendation from the party chair and bombed out there, too.
