Charles Ives, Symphony No. 4 - great piece of music
Just getting to the end of it. Also took a re-listen tonight to "Central Park in the Dark" and "The Unanswered Question" and "They Are There".

Ives doesn't get performed anywhere near enough. His name should be one that is easily and knowledgably rattled off the lips of all graduating high schoolers, like Mark Twain and George Washington and Einstein and Shackleton. Even if they decide they don't like him, though I think teens would very much like Ives' music, Americans should definitely know who Ives was.

I love the choral stuff in Symphony No. 4. The ending is sublime.

"They Are There" has some truly wonderful piano playing.

1. I love Ives
"The Unanswered Question" is one of my favorite pieces...ever.

Also love "Variation on America"

Lincoln Center does an annual Ives tribute that I must check out this year

2. To say nothing of "Over The Pavements"
The ending is one of the funniest moments in the history of music.

6. You gotta check out Grainger, Percy aldridge Grainger, that is.
The Grainger hardware catalog listens for squat. I'm particularly fond of Lincolnshire Posey and Enigma Variations.

Ives is one of my favorites.

5. I didn't used to like Ives, then my daughter's
violin teacher persuaded me to come hear him perform the violin sonata - don't remember which one, how many did Ives write? Anyway, this man (Alex Ross, the violin teacher) has absolutely marvelous bow control/dynamics, and he was just captivating - like the end of vaughan williams' 'lark ascending'. Made me admit he was right, it was a wonderful piece & a wonderful performance. Don't remember who his pianist was....friend of his from out-of-state.
