Commiserate or celebrate with me.

Ever done something bone-headed at work? Tell me about it. Make me feel better.

In my life I've seen stupid stunts pulled by privates, near miss construction accidents, and computer data magically vanish.

Fortunately, my fsck up was not the worst of the lot.

:toast:

1. Usually It's a Blessing in Disguise
Mate:

If you effed up something on the merits, as opposed to misconduct of some sort . . . it's probably for the best you got sacked.

I've had it happen about four times in 25 years. Always led to better things. Meanwhile, I hope you have a moonlight and/or "day job" to see you through.

If you worked for a corp, you're clearly better off without them. Maybe it's the right time to go back to school?

Don't let the b*st*rds get you down!

3. Going to school sounds good
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 12:32 AM by Liberal Classic
Think I can swing it. I'm thinking of selling my car. I'm 95% motorcycle now anyhow, I just need some good luggage.

On edit:

Partly my fault, partly can be blamed on commercial vendor. Just bad luck I guess. They're going to be sorry by next week.

6. School's the Tool
Almost dead bang sure getting another degree or certificate is the best ticket. You start over, nobody gives a sh*t about why you were fired . . . it's a "fresh start."

Besides, school's always a good place to meet new boys/girls. Hard bodies. Parties. Everyone's single. Uhhhhhhh . . . . .

Leastways, that's what it was for me. I went back to law school when I was 35. Been a practicing litigator now 13 years.

8. I need credentials
I've been a computer tech for more than ten years, but I am beginning to hate information technology. The money has been pretty good, but I wish I hadn't dropped out. I've done pretty well without a degree, but I can see that it is going to get in my way of what I want to do -- I'm thinking of a career change anyway. Change is good.

I have to probate my father's estate. Intestate succession they call it. I call it where's the damn will!? :) Legal jargon kind of reads like computer manuals to me, not so bad. Maybe I could be a law-talking guy.

11. Law School Rewards Analytical Thinking
If you are an IT person, you're probably good at solving problems, probably strong analytical skills, maybe a good math student.

These are the skills rewarded in law school. (I went to law school after B.A. and M.A. in literature, and several years in the publishing industry.) The dirty little secret is the good law students are the undergrad science and math majors. . . .

2. So what did you do?
The worst thing I ever did at a job was just stop doing any work at all while my boss was on a 2-week vacation. It was kind of like that Seinfeld episode where George gets a job working on "The Penske File". I was planning on quitting anyway.

5. Some important computer data
Mysteriously disappeared after a hardware problem. My fault, sort of. His data was pronounced gone, but what I toasted was the new stuff he was working on as we're trying to fix the problem.

4. i have a job again, but
... having been unemployed for so long has permanently changed my outlook. i don't really feel like this is my job... i feel like i'm an unemployed person doing temp work. no, it isn't really temp work, but that's sort of how i feel about it.

the boss hates me already.

yes, i've messed up at other jobs. but oddly enough, i've never been fired for such things. in fact, AFAIK none of them even showed up on management's radar.

enough about me. what are your plans? you seem to have a good attitude about the change!

7. Change is good
I always like meeting new people anyway. I didn't mean to screw up. Just had my dad's funeral three weeks ago and I fat finger a computer repair. When it rains it pours.

I was thinking of quitting next year some time (Oops) I have been saving money for going back to college. The problem is, I am now without work ahead of schedule. I'm going to have to take some part time work sooner than I'd hoped.

9. got fired last year
My manager was the third one I'd had in two years, and never wanted me on his team in the first place. My internet addiction (mostly to DU, no porn, no gambling) problem gave them ammo. My manager never even considered any kind of suspension, demotion, or other discipline. He simply terminated me.

Only really, really stupid thing I've done in my work life, and I get majorly busted for my first offense.

Ah well, I wasn't happy there anyway, so I'm trying to look at it as the universe forcing me to do what I should have done anyway.

10. Man, at least I did something stupid
Browsing a website is kind of strict, but yeah, I believe he could do that.

I've had bad mojo whenever I get a new boss. It seems like the past few jobs go great, until the current boss leaves and the new yahoo manager steps off the short bus. Things go to hell on the express after that.

13. i felt the same way
when my boss told me he wouldn't be needing me last summer. I was fine with it. 8 months later and no job and I'm dying. Of course, I haven't applied at McDonald's yet - but that isn't too far off I'm sure.

14. I got fired from a job over two years ago
It was excellent pay, good people, and I was the best they had for the job I was doing. All of a sudden, company get's bought out and I'm expendable, go figure.

16. I'm getting laid off on Friday
Actually, technically I am resigning for good cause, but I was given the choice between doing that or getting terminated. Luckily I have enough vacation time saved up to carry me on payroll for another month, by which time I will hopefully be working again, even if I have to take a pay cut. In fact I had a couple of interviews yesterday. So why was I asked to resign? My boss said he didn't like my writing style anymore, and it was taking him too long to redraft my product. Of course he never mentioned that in my last performance review, so it doesn't make any sense, but whatever. At least I didn't do anything wrong and I'll be eligible for rehire should there be another opening with a different supervisor in the future.
