1. Ooh! My dad had that a couple of years ago. He's not one to whine...
until he had gout! Must be painful! Hope it doesn't last long!

7. It has already lasted a couple of weeks
and I guess I need to drink a lot of water

and raise hell with my doc who seems to have pawned off the job of telling me on his nurse who didn't seem to know what to tell me really.

18. I hate docs who hide behind their nurses. Makes me miss the old days,
when doctors had a sense of responsibility.

I know my dad used to soak his feet in epsom salts. Took some Rx med, too, but I don't know what it was.

Good luck!

23. Hell, I Had To Bully My Way Through The Answering Service
I called during the day, this morning, and left a message for the nurse and the doctor. No one replied to my message, no Rx called in. So I called the doc on call (my doc's partner, and someone I know personally as well) and had to argue with the answering service about whether I was having an emergency. I finally got her to put me through when I told her that "when I talk to Dr. ___ and Dr. ___ I will tell them that Operator 7 (that is the only name she would give me) was rude and wouldn't put me through to them" suddenly she said she would put me through. The doc called, she was very pleasant and we discussed it and she called me in some allopurinol.

So, I agree, hiding behind your nurses and your answering service is cheezy and lazy.

Epsom salts, I'll give it a try, they tend to draw out toxins I think. I need to go sweat in the sauna too I think.

15. it was a dramatically quick fix, for him
he'd even get those awful canned (in plain water) cherries to save money.

22. Let me add my endorsement of the cherries
Or cherry juice, as long as it's pure juice, not sweetened or diluted with other juices. Trader Joes has some great stuff, if you have one in your area, but any decent grocery store should sell it in some form. Fresh cherries, of course, are in season right now, but the dried ones work just as well for this sort of thing.

In my case, it knocked out the gout within a day

4. Cherries or cherry juice
Or even the cherry extract supplements. They do help - my husband suffers from occasional gout. It sucks. :(

14. supposed to....
I'm lousy at remembering to take meds. And of course, once a gout attack begins, allopurinol is counterindicated until the attack is over. That happened to me on a trip to Colorado a few weeks ago.

Do NOT take aspirin. Acetaminophen (or the anti-inflammatory of your choice) is the way to go.

No beer or bacon, either, which really fucking sucks.

17. Well, the
beer and bacon advice was obvious, but PLEASE remember that aspirin can actually make gout worse. How did I find out? By not knowing and continuously pumping aspirin into myself during a gout attack until I actually had to crawl from my bedroom to my kitchen because my gout was so bad that hopping on one leg made it flare up.

It's a long term solution.

Those uric acid crystals congregrating in your joints hurt like hell.

For me it was toes or ankles.
