My 10-year-old on Gay Marriage...
It's on the news 24/7. I was watching Larry King Live, and he walked in and heard the Republican congresswoman's negative comments. I haven't talked about this issue with anyone--so he didn't pick up my position on it. However, he is a proud little Democrat.

Here's his reaction to the Republican congresswoman:

"It's like, DUH, civil rights and pro-choice. Everyone should have the choice to get married. It's clear as a sign falling from the sky saying 'Duh!' People should have equal rights. Why can't stupid Republicans see the sign?"

Out of the mouths of babes...I am extremely proud of my son at this moment.

astoundingly acute perception he has. If only he could be at the next Shrub press conference!

I can hear it now:
Mr President? It's like DUH! HOW STUPID ARE YOU?

May he have a long, healthy, love filled life whilst he travels the country making right wingers feel like idiots with his wisdom!

4. that's great. My almost 9 year old, said this tonight at dinner...
Dad, how come most of the people in the country don't want to let those people marry?
I said, "I don't know, honey, I think they are scared"

She says....

Scared of what? Being wrong again? Like they were with slavery, and indians and civil rights?

Yes, my little one. You got it right. Right on the head.

your questions. He is digging reading the responses to this thread; he laughed at yours.

And, on edit, why would I make up a story like this? I have been silent on this issue at DU; I thought his remark was BEAUTIFUL and that is why I posted it. Yeah, making up a story about my son to improve my standing in an anonymous internet forum--makes lots of sense. :eyes:

21. A few Sundays ago, I attended a pro-gay-marriage rally...

...at a church, no less!

Actually, it was a counterrally to the one being held by Connecticut's so-called Religious Right on the steps of the state capital in Hartford. Interestingly, that particular Sunday was bitterly cold and windy, while the two days before and after it were warm and sunny. So the self-proclaimed "Christians" got to express their intolerance in the freezing cold while we who disagreed with them got to express our side of the issue in a nice, warm house of worship. Whose side do you think is God really on? :)

Anyway, one of the speakers was a woman who, with her partner, had adopted an Asian boy who is now five years old. The previous morning, she, her partner, and their son sat at the table with our local newspaper, the Hartford Courant. As the woman's partner read aloud an article about the anti-gay-marriage rally being held the next day, the child regaled the women with questions. It was during this Q&A session that the little boy summed up the issue quite nicely:

"But if we're for civil rights, what are those people for? Civil wrongs?"

She was our second mini-lop bunny, and she was quite a special creature indeed--had an IQ of about 650 and the personality of a tigress! Sadly, she passed on about three years ago at the ripe old age of 9 1/2. She was like Marlene Dietrich--as she aged, she just looked better all the time!

You can see pictures of her (including the original of my avatar) and our other bunnies (as well as some other things) in my webshots album, http://community.webshots.com/user/phalpern1.

Thanks for asking!

my son has taken to chastising * when * is on the tube. Granted he goes to a progressive school where the newsletter is full of anti* rhetoric. My son is almost 8 and we are very careful not to disparage others too much, or put words in his mouth, but these kids are mature enough and smart enough to think for themselves. :) It is neat when they start to ask these types of questions and have their own rationale.

the last couple of day has been rough for us politically minded queers..we are torn between our rights and rights of others (i think gay marriage is important but so is healthcare. so i would never vote third party and would thoroughly discourage others to do so based solely on this issue). your sons story literally has been the only thing that has made me smile in the last 48 hours.
