Did the Banana Splits inspire Bob Marley?

One is a children's TV classic, the other a famous reggae musician - but does the similarity between the Banana Splits' theme song and Bob Marley's Buffalo Soldier suggest the reggae icon had a rather unusual muse?

Listen to Buffalo Soldier - key lyric "Woy yo yo" - and The Tra La La Song, and it might seem like there is an echo in the room.

I can't listen to this until I get home later, but the article is hilarious.

What say you music lounge experts?

1. I'm on the fence on this one
I've known about this for years. I think there's even a book out about songs that sound like other songs. Anyhow, it's hard to say since Bob Marley did live in the UK around the same time this was on the air. Who knows.

Led Zeppelin ripped off Spirit, though. That one is far more blatant.

...if they hadn't ripped off Spirit.

3. maybe
I was whistling Buffalo Soldier at work one day, a number of years ago, and a co-worker thought it was The Banana Splits song.

(I'm a good whistler, so stop saying that. )

9. Well, with only 12 notes in the chromatic scale, there's bound to be repetition....
Some have theorized that if you sat 100 monkeys at 100 pianos for 100 years, "Never Gonna Give You Up" would be played at least once...

19. Considering that The Splits were one of the most influential bands ever
Of course Bob ripped them off. Who the fuck didn't?

I remember hearing that Drooper and Fleegle went into some heavy depression in the early 70s because of it. There was a rumor that Drooper was shooting up $1,000 worth of smack a day at one point.

On the VH1 Behind The Music, they had Snork playing some old demos that the Splits made and they were playing them side by side to some other songs that became hits for other bands later and they were complete fuckin' rip-offs.

Bingo said "We busted our motherfucking asses for years and then here comes bands like The Rolling fucking Stones and they stole our music and put their names on it. Listen to anything past "Sticky Fingers" man... Keith and Mick just robbed us fucking blind."

There's some footage floating around YouTube of Fleegle just sitting there snorting line after line and drinking a bottle of bourbon while listening to Zeppelin's "ZOSO" album and he is screaming "I wrote those fucking licks man.... I wrote all those fucking licks!". It's some of the saddest footage you'll ever see.

T.B.S. will never get in the Hall of Fame, they'll probably never record again and most of the band are so strung out and burnt out that they can hardly play anymore anyway. It is just another example of too much too soon and another Rock and Roll tragedy.

Long Live the Splits!

The things they did to/with those groupies, man.... clearly the signs of tortured geniuses gone WAY out of control. Sad, sad story.

28. I'd have to agree...
I heard that the 3 groupies have all been locked away in some ass-end-of-nowhere mental institution for "the greater good of society." All they do now is pull each other's hair out while repeating, "Making up a mess of fun..." over and over and over. The things they must have seen....

29. I'm not on the fence. It's an obvious homage by Bob...
...to the Splits, and I wish I could find what coincidentally I read just two weeks ago, where Marley flat-out SAYS he took the riff from the Banana Splits. I say this as one who eagerly awaited and then did watch the first "Splits" TV show in '68, and one who's been heavily into Marley since '75 and actually saw his last concert in Pittsburgh. So I say this with all due respect to Bob: He was riffing on the Banana Splits, no question about it.
