RIP: LeRoi Moore (DMB Sax player)
I know here on DU most of you have a strong anti DMB bias but not for me. this is truly sad news indeed.

"LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. Moore had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program."

Apparenlty the show is still on for tonight at the Staples center....How intense will that be?

2. Sweet.....
What a shame. The band has been on fire on this tour. Jeff Coffin has abley stepped in for leRoi and Tim Reynolds has been killing it on guitar, but this is going to be something hard to deal with for a while for them.....

Wonder if Jeff will stay with Dave or go back to Bela Fleck's band?

12. That's terrible!

I'm not a huge DMB fan, but I have one of their live concert DVD's that I watch every once in a while. My 10 y.o. son set us up for a game night last week, and he put on the DMB DVD for me to watch/listen to while we played. I told him that the sax player was my favorite member of the band.

Rest in peace, LeRoi. Your music will live on.

13. I love the DMB, and am very sad about Moore's death.
I've never understood the anti-DMB bias around here. I'm no slouch when it comes to musical taste, and I like them very much. And they put on one HELL of a show.

The story I read this morning said Bela Fleck's sax player had been filling in for them this summer while Moore recovered, and sat in last night for the concert here in LA. I can't imagine what those guys are going through--the band never would have happened without Moore (if you know the backstory on how the DMB formed).

17. Its because its "not cool" to like DMB
Because they are mainstream, and you can't like anything that is mainstream, you have to be a total music snob.

14. Although I hadn't seen him perform in more than 10 years
His passing makes me sad. The last time I saw him he was a suprise guest at the opening show of the Phish summer tour in '97. He came in during a long open ended jam and was fantastic. At the height of it he motioned to one of the stage hands and they brought out a 2nd soprano sax and he started playing both at the same time (and very well). It was one of the more amazing musical performances I've seen in my time.. and I've seen alot.

I was fortunate enough to be able to catch 5 more that tour from Phoenix to the Gorge and they all got better. Shoreline in particular was phenominal. If you ever happen accross that one, it is definitley worth a listen. It was the day before Jerry Garcia's birthday (7/31), not sure if that had anything to do with it, but whatever they were channeling that night it was by far the best show I've seen them do out of 50 or so times I've seen them.

18. Trey (Phish) on LeRoi (97 show content)
When Phish played Virginia Beach in 1997, LeRoi came on stage and started playing three saxophones at once and set off the most hilarious chain of events. Within minutes Page was playing four of his keyboards with his hands and feet and I had three guitars on and drumsticks in my hand banging on Fish's drums. and Mike was playing two basses. It was just a phenomenal moment! And I remember LeRoi laughing with his mouth full of saxophones.

We miss you LeRoi and thank you for the joy you brought all of us.
