Man says fish salad gave him 9-foot tapeworm
CHICAGO - A man who contends he got a 9-foot tapeworm after eating undercooked fish has sued a Chicago restaurant.

In the lawsuit filed Monday, Anthony Franz said he ordered salmon salad for lunch from Shaw's Crab House in 2006 and fell violently ill. He later passed the giant parasite, which a pathologist determined came from undercooked fish, such as salmon.

Franz's lawsuit seeks $100,000 from Shaw's and its parent company, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, contending the restaurant's staff was negligent in serving him improperly cooked fish.

But Carrol Symank, vice president of food safety for Lettuce Entertain You, said the tapeworm didn't come from Shaw's.

"We have done a thorough investigation and we're confident the restaurant is not the source," he said.

Tapeworms can measure up to 50 feet long.

11. One of the all-time classic Stooges bits...
...the first time I head it I thought "Did he really just say what I thought he said?"

The second had to be in a Shemp episode in which they were captured by headhunters / cannibals, and the leader of the village points to Shemp and says "YOU...the BEAUTIFUL one."

3. Thanks for sharing.
I like the YouTube music videos we cross-post better than 9-foot tapeworms, but that's just me.

5. I'm curious as to how long "later" is in that story.
Be funny if it gets to court and we find out that "later" is "four days" or something idiotic like that.

and became the host for a 30-foot tapeworm.

I don't know how this guy can definitively say the salmon from Shaw's was the tapeworm culprit.

Around here, there are a lot of hole in the wall sushi dives and to eat raw fish there is a risky proposition.

10. I would think that it would take some time to grow a 9ft tapeworm
If he got sick within a few days of eating the salmon - which would seem to be the case, if he blamed his illness on that- then I doubt he would have had a worm that long.

It's possible that undercooked fish might have made him sick, which caused him to pass the tapeworm, in which case Shaw's actually did him a favor by making him sick, because otherwise, he might have had a 20 ft worm in his gut before he discovered it.

12. I didn't know that you weren't supposed to eat undercooked salmon.
I always undercook salmon. In fact, I've eaten it raw. Guess I'd better get checked for tapeworm.
