4. I've always heard it said
Kuh-THOOL-who.

Worked in a science fiction bookstore for a few years and that was the standard pronunciation of the highly informed collector who ran the mail order dept (may you RIP, Pete).

5. That's not how Lovecraft supposedly preferred to pronounce it!
Based, that is, on comments cited in Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game v.5.

Regardless, everyone I've ever heard pronounce it has pronounced it either as "Kuh-THOOL-who" or simply "Kuh-THOOL-oo."

6. For you grammarians out there, here is the way it is pronounced..
Donald Rumsfeld is giving the President his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, three Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

11. I always said Kuh-THOO-loo.
Then again, I'm from the South.

I was the president for the local Campus Crusade for Cthulhu, though.

12. It can't be pronounced by humans
We can only approximate the sound of this alien language.

According to Lovecraft: "the first syllable is pronounced gutturally and very thickly. The u is about like that in full; and the first syllable is not unlike klul in sound, hence the h represents the guttural thickness."
H. P. Lovecraft, Selected Letters V
