Oscar predictions! Post your Oscar predictions here!
The ballots are in, so there's no point in lobbying the Academy any longer--although you might try sleeping with someone at that accounting firm so that the count goes in your favor.

Predictions?

Here are mine:

Best supporting actor--Tim Robbins. No one else has sufficient enough buzz to over take him.

Best supporting actress--Renee blew it big time, major league big time, only two days before ballots were due. As to whether she'll win, Renee said, "I've certainly earned the award. Last year I was nominated for 'Chicago,' but I left empty-handed. I think this year, Hollywood will be fair.!" Boo! Sour grapes and no show of humility. The Iranian actress, whose name I won't even try to spell, will win. Renee's attitude has pissed off a sufficient number of voters to sway the tide.

Best actor--Sean Penn--Johnny Depp's SAG win only proves that Bill Murray won't win, since the comedy vote will now be split.

Best actress--out on a limb, I'm saying Diane Keaton. Have not seen either flick, and Charlie is a heavy favorite; however, I think the Academy will go for age and maturity this time around--I think there are a lot of people in the same age group as Diane who are glad a woman her age can look sexy/appealing. It'll be close.

Best picture/director--this is more difficult than one might think. LOTR and Peter Jackson have swept everything so far. However, Academy voters are a bunch of snobs. The movie, they'll argue, isn't "serious" enough. Yeah, like that piece of shit known as Braveheart was even a bearable movie. Anyway, Peter Weir or Clint might take the director honors, however, I still think Peter and LOTR will squeeze by.

And yours?????????

1. I'll agree for the most part except...
I think Theron will get best actress. I saw Monster last week and she was doing more than acting, she was channeling. I have rarely seen a more believable performance. The movie itself was disturbing in a lot of ways and not exactly a great movie, but the acting was without fault.

9. Saw some reviews that loved Charlize, but HATED the movie itself.
That might hurt her.

Anyway, I can't believe she's more believable than Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind, or Katharine Hepburn in Lion in the Winter.

2. Best Actor = Johnny Depp
I could equally argue that SP and BM will split the expected vote, leaving Johnny open to take it.

8. Ah, but comic performances NEVER win--there are far too few voters in
the Academy who will even consider voting for a comic performance.

10. Cat Ballou is the prototype
performance here. RIP, Lee Marvin.

Getting an Oscar for a comedic performance happens rarely, granted, but it does happen. Odd, since any actor worth their salt will tell you that getting people to laugh is very much harder than getting them to cry. Besides, JD's performance was so undeniably well-done, a master class in acting, that you can't rule it out completely.

Sean Penn looks the same in every movie..like he's having trouble moving his bowels. :hurts: He didn't break any new ground for himself as an artist in this performance, IMO.

Ben Kingsley, OTOH, may take it as well.

13. Johnny's first nomination, Sean's fourth...
...that alone will do it.

15. Hollywood scuttlebutt
at the moment is that since JD won the SAG award, he could very well take the Oscar too.

Why?

SAG members (Johnny's peers) make up the largest contingent within the Academy. No logical reason to think they'd split their ballots from one award to the next.

Anyway, the place has been abuzz with JD talk since Sunday night. :D

We'll just have to wait and see.

16. Renee won the SAG last year, as did Daniel Day Lewis and Christopher
Walken--none won Oscars. Only one of four wins--that's the way it happened the year before that also.

7. The one I might disagree with is Best Adapted Screenplay...
...I think it will go to something else--the voters will see the movie more as a visual accomplishment.

6. I'm sort of worried about Master and Commander getting so many...
...that was a suprise. I thought LOTR's main competition would be Cold Mountain, but that pretty much got sh*t on by the voters.

11. There's no way in hell Charleze Theron will not win the Academy Award
It's a performance that can be mentioned along with Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice.

Have you noticed that actors tend to win the Oscar for star vehicles in big epic pics, while women seem to take the prize for quirky meaty roles in independent films.

Hallie Berry - Monsters Ball
Hillary Swank - Boys Don't Cry
Jessica Lange - Blue Sky
Susan Sarandon - Dead Man Walking
Francis McDormond - Fargo
Holly Hunter - The Piano

When's the last actress that won for a big Hollywood movie?

12. Probably Vivien Leigh!
Actually, you'd probably have to say Gweneth Paltrow, or Helen Hunt, neither of whom deserved it.

17. Maltin was on Wayne Brady today...
He said that Actresses that make themselves look "less pretty" have a greater chance of going home with the hardware.
