Poll question: Do you like dogs?
No comparison here - just a yes, no, or neutral. I'm a big dog person as I consider them to be great, lifelong companions and friends. Would never be without one. They make you laugh, and give you comfort, affection, good times and loyalty.

Often I get more upset at the suffering of dogs than I do of people. I guess it's the innocence of dogs.

Looks like you're having fun, too. I've always liked dogs, usually the larger breeds (Newfies, etc.) but don't have the space for them right now. Sled dogs are great, too!

9. Sometimes
Occasional visits by my roomates dogs are fine, as is playing with them or taking them for walks.

+ 100db barking whenever so much as a leaf drops outside isn't cool, nor is it cool when I get home, or at 6 in the morning, plus they really fucking stink if they don't get their baths, the steal my cat's food if I'm not around, rip out the trash, etc etc.

So, most of the time these mutts are okay in my books, but other times I want to pull out a .45 and blast em in the heads. Of course I'd never do that.

10. They're ok
I used to be morbidly fearful of dogs growing up. Didn't like the barking, and the being jumped on. I got bit a couple of times. I found their behavior way too unpredictable.

I'm not afraid of dogs anymore, but the best I can do is feel neutral around them.

Give me a nice, quiet cat anyday. ;-)

Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 06:05 PM by mvd
A lot depends on your experiences and preferences. :-) My grandfather did take to my dog Reba though when she came in and comforted him when he was feeling down. Before that he just kind of saw them as food hounds. And I think he's still a little afraid.

21. With you, supernova, except I am not neutral.
I got jumped on by some as a child, so I would not get near one for years. I hate the barking, the aggressive behavior that most of them exhibit. They remind me of republicans, in that way.

I am not neutral; I can not STAND them!!

27. What most dog owners don't understand
I hear this all the time: "Oh, he's such a nice, friendly dog. He wouldn't hurt a flea!"

What some dog owners I have met don't understand is that, their pet is nice to its owners, but that same dog can be very wary of and sometimes aggressive toward strangers or others that do not come to the house every day.

I wish the dog owners I have come across had less of a blind spot about that concept.

neutral about dogs, having been bitten as a child (as was one of my sons). my son wants one, but i'm so torn. dogs stink, scoot, bark, and destroy property and you can't leave them alone for a few days like you can a cat.

so cats win;-)

not just beagles, but all dogs. Hardly ever met a dog I didn't like (though I've read about some who were not treated right by thoughtless or cruel people, driving the dogs mad). There's not much I wouldn't do for my dogs, including eye surgery to correct blindness due to cataracts (this June for the cocker). And in return...I get all the lovin' devotion a man can imagine!

19. Arf! Arf!
Saved two from the pound. My half Akita/Half Shepard was the result of an over the fence "hunter" and the Akita owner was going to give the pups a very long bath. My half collie / half shepard was rescued from my brother and his fundie crowd (inside joke). Both have great dispositions and Zeus (Akita) doesn't bark much at all. Maggie on the other hand barks at everything. They are quite a pair and provide me with plenty of exercise!

25. I like dogs now
For a while I was afraid of dogs. I was attacked by an unattended German Shepherd when I was 3 years old. I wasn't badly hurt but very scared.
Now I love dogs. My little dog that we adopted from the Humane Society two years ago loves me and I love him too. Most other dogs and I get along too.

There are dogs I wouldn't trust as far as I can throw a piano. I'm in the business of cleaning up other people's animal abuse and neglect, it is necessary that dogs know their social status. I am the alpha male with my dogs. Expose your dogs to a variety of situations, people and teach it good manners!
My favourite breed is Doberman. Contrary to popular misconception they are, when raised properly, nothing but a sack of suck.

50. Gotta love doogers
As someone else mentioned, they can always brighten even the shittiest day.

Tonight, for instance, I stormed home in a foul mood after a ridiculous bad beat in sports betting. Had under 155 in the East Tenn St/Chattanooga game. It was 28-24 at halftime and 49-41 with 10 minutes left. I was literally at least a 200-1 favorite at that point. Somehow they scored 66 points in the final 10 minutes and I lost by 1, 84-72. My friends in the Stardust sportsbook said it was perhaps the worst beat they had seen in years.

Faithful old Awsi the poodle dooger didn't care, leaping onto the bed when I returned and relentlessly licking my left cheek. I took him for his treasured late night walk and gave thanks he is still spry and alert at 14 1/2. Otherwise, I might have steamed over the silly basketball result for hours.

Also, an extremely interesting lesson in dooger protection instincts yesterday at the golf course. I hit my drive on #5 in the far left rough, close to a fence and homes. A little black dog who wanders the course walked past, tail fluttering. I patted him while waiting for the green to clear and he enjoyed it.

One hole later I yanked the identical drive. This time the same black dog yapped incessantly, almost violently. I was perplexed, until his owner called Blackie and waved to me. I was alongside Blackie's home, and he was warning me to get out of there pronto, buster.
