Poll question: What type of Internet Service do you have?
I need 100 votes for research on something I want to write.

For my purposes, broadband = cable modem, DSL, T-1, or satellite service of equivalent speed.

Y'all please help me keep this kicked until I get 100 votes. Thanks! :D

9. DSL rocks
I discovered my freeze-up problems were due to switching between Linux's web browser (mozilla, naturally, konquerer needs work on it...) and my Windows emulation via vmware. (I use vmware so I can work on images with the $150 software I bought, though I otherwise don't need windows at all... some day I'll ask the admins to get me my p/w, since they took away the automated system. )

I personally use Qwest's $26.99/mo service (256Kbit speed), though I'm going to upgrade to their 26x faster service (1.5Mbit speed, :9 )for $39/mo...

15. Wait a dern minute
In a contraction, you put the apostrophe where the letters come out. Like:

You are = You're
They are = They're

Well, y'all is a contraction for "you all," so

You all = Y'all

What am I missing???

14. Broadband everywhere.
DSL at home, and a kickass T1 at work.

I'll never go back to dial-up. I remember being thrilled whenever I got an actual connection speed of 40K. Oy.

17. 40K is thrilling for me!
This poll is really driving home how backwards I am by still having dial-up at home.

Alas, DSL appears to not be an option for me. And cable appears to be ridiculously expensive around here, but I haven't looked into it too deeply yet.

So meanwhile, I plod along, lucky to get 30-35K connection speeds.

20. Sorry about that, Peter.
I wasn't poking fun or anything. Have you considered trying one of those "accelerated" dial-up services? I'm not quite sure how they work, but it's supposed to make browsing a bit faster. Downloads will still take forever, though.

24. Yeah....
it sucks to have to kill your food and drag it back to the cave, eh?

I got cable modem, unlimited access, 10 e-mail addresses, 10 megs of web site space, blah blah blah, for $60.95 per month. I was paying $29.95 for dial-up. It was twice as much, and I'm poor, but I have no cable TV or beer bills as I don't watch TV or drink, so I consider it my "entertainment" budget as well as a business expense (I work from home).

27. Holy CRAP! You're paying 60 bucks a month?!?!
I'm only paying 26.95 for DSL, 10 email addresses (I only use one), and 50 megs of web-space. True, cable is faster than DSL, but only faster in terms of the time it takes you to blink.

28. All of my friends on DSL have BIG problems
the only DSL available where I am is BellSouth, and it's ALWAYS down. And every computer in the house has the same IP address, which causes big problems, too.

I have been offline for less than an hour in the past eight months.

My mom had DSL for a year and she was offline at least an hour every DAY.

It's worth the extra dollar a day to me to never have to worry about being offline when I need the web -- especially if I have a deadline.

35. Nope. I have SBC.
It's nice to be able to pay it with my phone bill. The last time I called and threatened to cancel my DSL, they knocked down the price. (I wasn't going to cancel anyway. I just wanted to see what they'd say) :D

25. I think NetZero offers that service.
Again, I can't vouch for the reliability of their claims. It's probably something having to do with keeping more images in your cache, to make pages that you've previously visited load faster, but I could be way off.

Despite the cost, if you ponied up the dough for cable (since DSL isn't an option), you'd never regret it.

Though my dorm cable hookup uses a private network, and my job one uses a public one, so that sites accessed could be monitored.

30. ISDN counts as "dialup"?
Yup, I'm one of the half dozen or so people in the U.S. who still has an ISDN connection. Actually got it not too long ago, to replace dialup. I'm in a rural area and the only other option was satellite--until last month, when Sprint brought DSL service out to the boondocks.

39. Thanks for asking me

As I sit installing DSL tonight. :) Well almost installing it. There is this little problem with a blinking light.

I was on DSL until I moved 6 months ago, and have used Dialup. But Verizon has this great deal. If you take their 5 cent a minute long distences plan, you can have $5 off their DSL. So 1.5 Dsl is only going to cost me $29.95 per month.
