13. Studies of marital satisfaction reveal that more couples reported their
marriages to be happy in the late 1970's than did so in 1957, while couples in their second marriages believe them to be much happier than their first ones. Some commentators conclude that marriage is becoming less permanent but more satisfying. Others wonder, however, whether there is a vicious circle in our country, where no one even tries to sustain a relationship.

I've just begun but I am enjoying it. I think it's always a good thing to kind of temper our automatic assumptions with some research that puts it in a better perspective.

An example of that is the assumption so many people have that there is an epidemic of child abductions when the data shows that the rate hasn't really changed all that much over the years - it's just an increase in media coverage that makes it seem like there's so many more.

30. The word "testis" comes from the Latin meaning to bear witness.
Edited on Sat Aug-16-08 06:47 PM by Forkboy
In ancient Rome, only men could bear witness or testify in a public forum. In order to show importance to their testimony, they would hold their testicles as they spoke, and an oath was declared while holding another's testicles.

39. LOL...ok, I'll do it for you.
I'm clearly bored tonight. :)

The ancient Israelites and Romans knew the significance of testicles. The words testify, testimony and testicle all come from the Latin testis, for testicles. When Roman men gave testimony, they held their testicles in their hand, for they regarded them as sacred. This custom is mentioned in the Old Testament. In the King James translation, the passage reads, "And Abraham said: 'unto his eldest servant of his house... Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: And I will make thee swear...'"

32. I think this is interesting...
One of the first political editorial cartoons to ever appear in a US newspaper featured a terrapin named Ograbme! grabbing in its' beak the ass of a man stealing US goods to export to Britain. It was meant to convince the average citizen to support the Embargo Act of 1807 which the US imposed after Britain attempted to use force to stop the United States from trading with France whom the British were at war with, going so far as to attack US merchant ships on the high seas, force American citizens into British naval service and to pay pirates to disrupt trade routes. The US had officially taken a position on neutrality and had open trade relations with both sides prior to the passage of the Embargo Act. This embargo marked the first instance of an nation using fiscal warfare without a supporting military action to affirm its' rights. (It failed miserably, crippled the US economy, and contributed to hostilities in advance of the War of 1812.)

"Ograbme!" is an icon of many trade-protectionist organizations and occasionally still appears in political cartoons. What many people don't notice is "Ograbme!" spells embargo backwards.

I like this story as it reaffirms what I've known for years. Embargos don't work.

45. It's always the true stories on Snopes that get me
In late 1986 in the small farm town of Council Grove, Kansas (pop. 2300), Corky Woodward rented a camera and a videocassette player from the only rental store in town. Woodward, the sheriff of Morris County, then made an erotic tape of himself and his wife Dannette, but inadvertently left the tape in the VCR when he returned it to the store. The next person to rent the player got the tape as well, and soon hundreds of copies were circulating throughout town.

i take Jr. to baja fresh and it's dead, like 2:00pm so no lunch crowd, we get some food and sit. place is still empty ok? I take a big swig of diet pepsi and i went to say something right after when a huge burp came out, like epic so of course i just die laughing, like crying, nose running, the whole thing. Ok so my daughter says under her breath, "Mom!!! there are other people here!!' and i said i was too far away from the employee's for them to hear me and then she says "Mom!!! look behind you" so i did and the place was half full and there was a women sitting behind me. Well that just made the laughing worse, the more i tried to stifle myself the more i would laugh, anywho, that's my talent.
