20. Maybe nothing will come out of this.
I have to confess I used to be pretty homophobic myself. But I got over my own stupidity. Maybe others will too.

33. I'm not sure what the problem is.
I know in many cases being in the closet or feeling ashamed about certain normal curiosities makes people angry and hateful. Other than that it's just plain old sticking their noses in someone else's business and self righteousness. Back in my country generally speaking we weren't taught that it was something to hate like here. It was more that we thought it was something to make fun of. It was still wrong but homosexual characters (or effeminate as they were portrayed) in TV were always the comic relief. When I moved to the US and saw that people would get the shit beaten out of them just for being a certain way it blew my mind and it also taught me how intolerant we could be.

that this is a wedge issue...it seems either too important or not important enough. Too important to call people's love for each other a wedge, Too unimportant to the general scheme of life to be a wedge.

I understand your point
I am also legitimately angry.

Angry that the American voting public can be manipulated into making this an issue upon which you base your vote for President.

Angry that Bush* and company are cynically manipulating the masses.

Angry that they are DIVIDING THE COUNTRY for their own, selfish political and financial purpose.

.....and I am apprehensive that it will work and we'll be stuck with Bush* for four more years.

Hopefully there'll be equal rights for all someday. Sigh.

21. As a straight person I am very concerned
Up to this point the story of America has been one of expansion of rights. For the first time the PRESIDENT* is proposing to single out a group of citizens for discrimination and demonization. If we do not say that THIS CANNOT BE right HERE and NOW who is going to defend YOU when this emerging theocratic dictatorship decides it's YOUR TURN to be persecuted?

Still, more angry than sad.

Center statement on constitutional amendment banning gay marriage
Tuesday, February 24, 2004

Rally & Press Conference Tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 24) at the Center at 6PM!

New York, Feb. 24 — Responding to President Bush’s comments today supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, New York’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center — the largest LGBT community center on the East Coast — said it was unfortunate that the president was endorsing discrimination against lesbian and gay people.

“Singling out a group of people and encouraging discrimination against that group should not be on the president’s ‘to do’ list,” says Terry Boggis, director of the Center’s family program.

She noted that there are many issues the president should instead be expending his energy on, including grappling with the flailing economy, ensuring that more Americans can find jobs, and tackling the huge deficit that has incurred under his administration.

Says Boggis: “Thousands of same-sex couples have received marriage licenses in San Francisco over the past week, and I highly doubt that one heterosexual marriage has fallen apart because of that. Validating and affirming the rights of same-sex couples does not ‘threaten’ heterosexual marriages, it simply advances equality.”

Established in 1983, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center is the largest LGBT multi-service organization on the East Coast and second largest LGBT community center in the world. Every week, 6,000 people visit the Center, located at 208 West 13th Street, and more than 300 groups meet here. Visit www.gaycenter.org to learn more, or call 212.620.7310

14. Perplexed is more like it.
I find the whole thing confusing personally. It basically comes down to fighting over a word. If you have all the same benefits of a married person and they call it civil union what's the big deal? The same goes for the other side, if you are willing to give all the same benefits of a married couple what's the big deal about calling it marriage?

28. Hulk-like anger
I wonder how many people believed Bush when he talked about being in favor of a smaller federal government during the 2000 campaign? You know, a federal government that didn't interfere with the rights of states?

There's a real simple solution to this, too: allow any two adults that are not related by blood to be married in a civil ceremony. That takes care of the stupid arguments that gay marriage would result in incest or bestiality or polygamy. If a church wants to conduct the ceremony, fine, but at least give homosexual couples a chances. Hell, heterosexual couples have not exactly been the best argument for defining marriage as between a man and a woman. We have a high divorce rate, we can be married by an Elvis impersonator, and any crazed racist drug-addict child molester can get married in prison at taxpayer expense.

30. Angry, because Bush has done nothing on chemical safety...
...yet he wants a *#$%!! constitutional amendment on gay marriage. Meanwhile, tanks of poisonous chemicals roll by on train tracks near the Capitol. If one of them is attacked, even by a high-powered assault rifle, many people could die.

Naturally, Bush doesn't want to put financial pressures on the railroad companies (the Treasury secretary is the former CEO of CSX). If the voluntary program of protection doesn't work, that's thousands, perhaps millions of people DEAD.

But Bush is going to deal with gay marriage. Riiight.
