The beauty cult in this country really needs to be punctured. Maybe things like this will help. It's about time people realized that "beautiful" doesn't mean better, and isn't a qualification for acceptance or a relationship. Too often people find that out too late.

17. I didn't really mean for it to be funny...

but the truth is our western conceptions of aesthetic beauty are inextricably intertwined with consumerism. I don't see why it's such a stretch to say that artificial, unobtainable beauty standards that drive not only the beauty industry, but the fitness industry and a pretty good chunk of the pharmaceutical industry, not to mention fashion, well you get the point, can only be shattered once the consumption-driven "incentives" to buy these products and attempt to morph our physical bodies into these impossible standards are removed. And the only way to remove the desire to buy something is to make it either unavailable or undesirable. I.e., kill the industries or dramatically shift the culture. I don't see either of these happening without some drastic shift in capitalist-driven consumerism. We may get the former just by having cheap oil dry up.

15. I'll have a lot more respect for Dove when they start using more of this "real beauty"

in the ads promoting their products. I know they have a "real beauty" ad campaign featuring women of all sizes and shapes, but those women still have beautiful skin - all over! - unmarked by blemishes, age spots, bruises, scars, etc.; beautiful full hair; white, even teeth. Dove puts out these blurbs showing the fakery of model beauty and how we are bombarded by distorted images, but are they really listening to themselves? The company's purpose is still to promote items designed to improve appearance, giving us better skin, better hair, to make us softer, smoother, more radiant, to give the look of a tan, reduce lines, reduce wrinkles, and on and on.

Their products are sold by subtly implying that we still aren't good enough just the way we are, despite the Campaign For Real Beauty.

I'd agree they are doing more to raise awareness than any other similar company, but it still feels like mostly lip service to me.

unfortunately these 'real beauty workshops' will be about as effective as 'just say no to drugs' workshops. we can't just treat the symptoms.. we have the treat the illness - the media and hollywood portrayal of what is "hot"

I'm thinking about something like CSI: Miami. I swear, I've never seen a person on there with the slightest bit of excess body fat, or wrinkles or anything.

Is it possible to "perfect" everyone in a TV show or movie?

13. lighting makes a huge huge impact when it comes to tv and film

they also have gobs and gobs of makeup on.. i mean layers. you just can't tell on camera that they have as much as they have. in addition a lot of times the image is softened where it is almost a tiny bit blurry just to erase any flaws. in a way, HD has made these types of things more noticeable.

edit to add: a lot of hollywood actors and actress have airbrushed tans that are darker in their "flawed" areas. it can make them look "ripped", a size smaller, or "firmer"
