Poll question: Feeding the dogs stale baguettes
I am all about giving the dogs stale people food; my mom says "the dogs are not garbage cans!"

Take a side.

2. It's not good for them but...
I left a waffle sitting out for a few hours, remembered it, and threw it into the dog bowl this morning. He's healthy and thin as a rail. I'm not too concerned.

3. While it's true that dogs are not, indeed, garbage cans...
...my dog likes tofu. Not only tofu, but frickin' spicy tofu. That stuff IS garbage, so it makes me wonder...

4. Stale baguettes aren't garbage. Just not pleasant to people.
Pleasant to dogs? Probably, just like cat/dog crap and a whole lot of other stuff we'd rather not eat.

5. Agatha would LOVE that
Of course, she loves to eat poop, too, so her taste is a bit skewed. And it would give her wicked bad gas and the runs, but she'd goble it up lightning fast!

6. My dog would only eat it
If you slathered it in garlic butter and topped it with bacon. Come to think of it, she'd eat anything slathered in garlic butter and topped with bacon. She's a skinny minny, too.

7. It's not garbage and it's not unhealthy
it may not be appetizing for people, but if the dogs like it.... let them enjoy, as long as they are not over weight.

8. I've wondered this as well
I give my dogs whatever meat or veggies I have left on my plate usually, but always thought bread hosed up their stomachs.

Another thing I wonder is whether or not they can digest raw chicken MEAT or raw pork. Hec, dogs eat chickens... don't they?

:hi:

10. Not a good idea
Too much starchy food can give a dog acute pancreatitis. The staleness is not an issue.

12. Dogs are garbage cans.
I wouldn't give mine moldy or rotten food, but their digestive systems evolved to accomodate carrion. I think they'll happily handle day-old bread.

13. My 25 pound dog
Managed to pull a half pound of stale French bread off the counter and eat the entire thing a couple of years ago. He was rather bloated and sluggish for a few hours but he recovered alright.
When we give him people food, we usually only give him a small amount. Dog food is healthier (especially compared to bread made white flour) for dogs. Our dog tends to eat less dog food in proportion to the people food he gets. Other dogs eat the same amount and put on weight. Either way, too much isn't healthy.
