But that dream is slowly becoming just that--a dream--thanks to the large bookstore chains.

I saw these guys do this in a Discovery special about Cedar Point...It was like 8am in the morning, before the park opens. It looked so peaceful, standing there on top of the lift, seeing the whole horizon.

Eh' after a couple of weeks, it'd probably get boring.

9. Novel writer
I'd love to have that kind of imagination. It would fit me well, too, because I am somewhat of a homebody. I'd like to just be able to sleep until whenever, get up and write about five pages (or until my hearts content), and then do whatever for the rest of the day.

Unfortunately, I have a hard enough time just writing a three page paper for an English class. I don't think I have it in me to write a book, let alone write something good enough to get published, and then write the several others required for a career.

30. every novel writer starts out with a blank page
Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 03:47 PM by BigMcLargehuge
Take it from me. I've got three in the can and another in mid-production, all STILL unpublished. Though I just hired an editor. The formula for me is:

Write everyday, even if it's only for 20 minutes.

Keep a journal (and write in it before working on fiction)

Read EVERYTHING, and especially the genre in which you want to write (I DO NOT READ fiction when I am actively working on a project, as I tend to subconsciously coopt what I'm reading)

Listen CLOSELY to the way people talk to one another. (A great place to do this is the mall food court.)

Finish every story you start regardless of how long it takes or how shitty you think it has become. Develop a sense of obligation to your characters and that will keep you writing.

Don't concentrate, AT ALL, on the publishing/sale aspect of writiting until you're DONE writing a piece. It almost always short-circuits the story. Sometimes it helps to dedicate one afternoon a week to market research and publishing stuff (query letters, proposals, chapter samples, etc...) so you can keep an ever increasing series of manuscripts in circulation.

And here's the stupid one (all writers have at least one stupid reason for writing), find a keyboard that is pleasant to the fingertips and ears. It sounds really dumb but I derive immense tactile and aural pleasure from the sound of my fingers hammering away on my Apple Pro, and my Toshiba Satellite Laptop keyboards.

Oh, and get writing.

Writing the books is the easy part. Making a living at it is something else entirely. It's all about name recognition. If someone wrote a book and Paris Hilton slapped her name on it (regardless of the quality) it would still sell more than the best work of some truly great writers.

Just like the news, celebrity sells.

Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 03:36 PM by dolo amber
However, I haven't the slightest idea what it's called or how one becomes employed doing such:

I want to be the person who puts the music to TV shows, movies, whatever. I don't want to COMPOSE the music, as I have no such talent. I just want to be the person who adds the music. Loads of times I've listen to something and could instantly picture it being used in some scene or another I've watched before.

Plus, whoever's doing it these days sucks out loud a lot of the time. :D

Fiction, articles, books (fiction/non-fiction), screenplays (I've written a short one), poetry, technical writing.

So far I've published a couple of articles, some short stories, and some poetry, and up until I got laid off in Oct, was making a living doing technical writing. So I'm almost there -- just need to get the "successful" part going.

I worked in museums for many years, and loved it. But the job I was supposed to start last year evaporated (thank you Bush economy) and, with museum work in short supply, I'm now working for the state. 57. Singer- church music by day, slinky lounge singer by night
I'm a reasonably decent soprano too. I say church music because there have been so many beautiful pieces written for religious services from traditional Latin to mainline Protestant standards to Gospel. Slinky lounge singer because I have a secret vision of myself singing sultry jazzy songs on a black Steinway babygrand piano in a red silk dress. (No that I'll ever get to do that, but I think it would still be pretty neat.)

As always, I'm rather a paradox- O8) vs.

I was looking out my window one day when a DPW truck pulled up.Two men got out and lifted a drainage gate off and lowered the big screw thing from the truck into the hole to clear all the leaves and stuff so it wasn't clogged and would drain properly. This took about ten minutes. When they were done they replaced the grate. Then a third guy got out of the truck, walked over and spray painted a large orange X on it.

I want to be that orange X guy!

69. An optional one
... i.e., one that I don't have to turn up to every day (whether I
feel like it or not) in order to pay the bills.

I'm a jack of all trades by nature (and, yes, master of none) so I'd
really like to be able to do a bit of this and a bit of that.

One day a week for writing.
One day a week for fine art/craft.
One day a week for music.
One day a week for volunteer work (school or adult education pref.)
One day a week for whatever comes up unexpectedly (helping a friend
get his crops in, cleaning off the graffiti in our area, untrained
assistant for any caring job, whatever).

Dreams are great - some of them even come true!

Nihil
