hoping to get a PhD in Molecular medicine. I research colon cancer. Also a mid level surgery resident. Love people, don't like cancer, don't think anything we do in science or medicine is going to help make us better people, we'll all just live longer and fight more.
Am soo happy to be in DU, can't begin to tell you.

I pay my bills on my computer too. Isn't that ironic. I'd be lost if the internet shut down . . .

85. Yes I do, I like it a lot. Mostly 'cause I deal with Medical stuff
And I do wish some of my colleagues would visit this site and see the respect that the military gets here.

I am a contractor, so I don't directly work for the military. But, I have to say that I have had clients in both the military and civilian sectors, and I prefer the military because there's less BS. Maybe it comes from having all your budget dreams fulfilled.....

59. The Market Varies
It was very good for writers in high-tech companies here in Colorado Springs, before the "dot-com" bubble burst. Working for a defense contractor is fairly recession-proof.

Basically, the job entails translating Engineering into English. :-)

I've been a tech writer for almost 21 years now, and I love it.

and I work with the FBIA to capture the oral history tradition of 3 Native American tribes (don't be raggin' on me, they call themselves Native Americans and I like to address people in the language they prefer).

So that's 3 fundamentally low-paying but ultimately fulfilling jobs. In my spare time I write award-winning poetry, unpublished (but under negotiation) novels and submit the odd piece or two with miscellaneous periodicals.

I am a board certified Sous Chef and will from time to time pick up a restaurant shift and do catering work.

In short, there's darn-near nothin' I won't do to keep my kitty Masters in kibble and luxury cat-blankies.

Actually, I'm a computer programmer (website/database connectivity) who unfortunately due to Bush's crappy economy is on his second day of training to be technical help for a cell phone company at a third of my last salary.

I also have two side businesses - computer help for small businesses that is co-owned with two friends, and I'm an entertainer - magician, juggler, balloon twister. Have two weekend gigs starting on Friday twisting balloons at the Tulsa Indoor Fun Fair at which I will debut the fabulous Balloon-Mobile - A brightly painted trash can on wheels with containers suspended inside to hold my balloons instead of in a pouch like I normally do. I'm excited about this new direction that America is taking as I would never have been able to afford the expense of paint, a trash can, 7 plastic containers, and the threaded steel bars necessary to make the Balloon-Mobile without Bush's generous tax cut.

But I am oh so much more. "I'm not bad, Mr. Valiant. I'm just drawn that way."

Back home in CA my last job was something that would translate to "office manager." More like intractable people manager. Hell -- may as well have been a cat herder.

Out here, this was the best-paying and most easily-gettable job that matched my skill set. And I earn far, far more than I could doing the same job in So. Cali.

Don't get me wrong. It's not all about money. But right now we need every penny so I guess at the moment it is. again.

65. There's so many books out right now on Flash and Fireworks
that I can't keep track of them. If you try the dummy series (and that is NOT a personal slam :D) you my find that they handle some of the harder aspects of a program in better ways than a high-end manual. From there you could go to a higher level with a bertter understanding of the subject matter. Try checking the good press a book gets on Amazon from people that have read it. It is not always a good way of figuring out if a book is right for you, but it may help.

However you want to handle it you should also look into books on action script. If you have the time you may want to take a class on it.

Other than that the only thing to say is to keep your flash/fireworks clean and simple. There are so many sites that just dog a system's bandwidth and the end user/viewer can be a very fickle person. Nobody likes to wait for a sloowwww load. Always try checking your work on a slower machine if possible.

I hope that helped and that I didn't ramble.

-Ken

I LOVE my job. I get to help young (mostly) adults pursue their goals of being trained in a specific skill (allied health, such as nursing). My job is part success skills training and part social worker/counselor. I get paid for helping other people and it's wonderful!

I design/build custom furniture - anything from "one-off" to traditional Shaker/Stickley/Federal etc.

I used to be a systems architect for wireless RFID networks, but gave it up to do something I actually liked. Plus I got tired of watching 20 somethings try and pretend like they had business acumen. Another game of ping-pong, anyone?? :)

Somehow it's cheaper for them to hire us as temps. It's been almost a year and it doesn't seem like they care to offer anything permanent here. Other people I know can't even get hired so I guess I shouldn't complain.

110. I have used temps
I also have two retirees that come in on a contract basis. The problem with a small firm is that you can't guarantee a work load. You may get a big job in and know that you'll be ok and busy for 4 months but don't know what will happen after that. It's not really fair to an employee to hire under those conditions. Tough on the owner as well, after finally getting someone up to snuff on your office standards.

It's actually cheaper to hire. The temp agency charges maybe $35 an hour and pays the temp maybe $16. I could hire him for maybe $18-20 plus some benefits for less than I pay the agency but then again, if you only know the job you have and not the next one...

I'd much prefer hiring but you can't really tell someone in an interview that it's full time, but you can only promise 14 weeks.

Hey, I have another guy, former full timer, who prefers to work at home mostly on a contract basis. He has a disability and shares custody and alot of time with his son so we worked it out. Through the wonders of the internet, phone and fax we have done fairly complex projects and seen each other only for lunch on fridays.

If you want to send me a resume maybe we can work out some long distance consulting contract work. PM me an email addy if you're interested.

If you're not rooted in Ohio, I am looking for a partner and/or merger. In any event, best of luck to you!! It can be a tough business!

114. I know exactly what you mean.
I was laid off a small firm for those exact same reasons. Now I work as a temp for a huge firm. But they also offer no guarantees. I do work full time but I have the feeling that if things don't improve I may go any day now. Thank you. I appreciate you taking time to reply.

116. No problem
Like I said, it's a tough business. I get spam from India, they say they have american trained architects and CAD draftspeople, all I have to do is send em my preliminaries and they'll create the contract docs. I think they charge like $12 an hour. That is what we are up against.

For some reason clients want to shop for the cheapest architectural services, like it's a commodity. A good architect can save his clients more than his fees in construction costs. Would you shop for the cheapest surgeon or lawyer? It's a process and a service and ya get what ya pay for.

Sighhhhh, apologies to the accountants and attorneys on this board, but they are the ones making bottom line dollar decisions for my clients.

106. Disability. plus a rental unit upstairs...
and my wife is a graphic designer.

btw- my disability payments are based on the FICA amount that was taken out of my paychecks over 25+ years of working. And one of the companies that I worked for for over 2 years took the money out, but never paid it into the system- and they've long since dissolved and gone out of business. as a result, my monthly payments are about 10% less than they should be.

when we bought this house, I was working and we planned to convert it from a 2-flat to single family- my disability changed those plans and we now rent out the upstairs apartment to a female college student for $675/month.

175. "homemaker" and student
Also known as the unpaid cook, chauffer, child development expert, health analyst, and manager of it all. I miss working and even more, I miss getting paid.

I've always worked part-time until 3 years ago. In the past, I've worked as a post partum doula (assist new mothers in nonclinical newborn care and was a lay lactation expert), tutored 1st and 2nd graders in a reading program, and taught preschool. I even had a brief stint teaching Gymboree classes

Currently, I'm in school part-time to become a registered nurse (still want to work with newborns and little ones, but I want a bit more $$$). I should be finished with that in 2 years.
