i found the answer on a blog somewhere with people talking about it...

It's based on the principle that, of the numbers you can select, they are ALL multiples of 9. Given that reality, the puzzle simply places the same symbol on those multiples, switching the symbol each time but keeping the intervals stable. The game "appears" to be reading your mind, but in reality each time you play, the numbers 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, and 81 ALL have the same symbol...So in a way, it IS based on probability--the probability that you won't notice.

12. Seen this before...

No matter what you pick, the result is always some multiple of 9. If you look at the runes, 9, 18, 27, etc. are always the same rune. So as long as you do your math right, it will always guess correctly.
