1. Can't even really remember the circumstances, but I figure someone here will know.
It was, I believe, in 2006, in a speed skating event. The main contenders all took a spill, leaving the gold to some guy who wasn't predicted to come anywhere close to bronze. I was watching it and almost keeled over from shock.

Does anyone know more about this? I'm working from home today and shouldn't really even be posting here, much less looking this up.

And yes, it really doesn't qualify as a "great Olympic moment," but it was the first thing I thought of when I saw your post. However, in the spirit of your post:

I thought 2006 sounded a little recent, but...

Thanks for looking this one up for me, much appreciated. I hope you got to see that race on TV, it was amazing - even if not "classic." :)

Speed skating's one of my favorite Winter events. That was epic.

7. one of my favorites, and she was a local hero(ine) in our area, Wilma Rudolph
ROME 1960

The main drag from the Big Mall all the way into downtown Clarksville Tennessee is named Wilma Rudolph Boulevard
