For the first time in probably over 35 years
I popped popcorn on the stovetop. Melted a little butter and let it cool, sprinkled it with some salt. And it was perfect! So silly, but I seriously didn't remember how much oil or popcorn to put in the pan and was sure I would burn it.

4. It was so much better.
Not to mention that I don't trust those folks that make the flavorings. Ain't nothing natural about most of that stuff. :hi:

9. There has been some recent publicity about how bad that microwave popcorn is for you.

11. It's the so-called
"natural flavorings" that are created for food, including microwave popcorn. What they use in it has been linked to serious illnesses in the people who handle the stuff where it's made. I stopped buying the stuff long ago and just bought some organic popping corn a few months ago. I kept forgetting it was in the cabinet til last night.

There's a section on natural flavorings in Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser that was very interesting. :hi:

18. and even if you go high end popcorn with the butter
it is still SO much cheaper than the crud in the microwave bags. I don't go so far as throwing that stuff away if somebody gifts it to me (I'm known for my popcorn love) but I NEVER buy it - god the real stuff is cheaper, takes the same amount of time, only adds a pan to the dishwasher load, and tastes so much better there is just no comparison.

7. I do it every year
around Christmas...that's what we string for the tree. No salt, no butter -- just plain popcorn. The kids get a huge kick out of it and I wind up doing it a few more times for them, only with salt and butter.

I'm amused too. Plain old unpopped popcorn is on my list for the store. :)

13. This is the ONLY way that
I make popcorn, (buy organic popcorn in bulk at health food store) and using my mom's very old stainless steel pan.

It's always super yummy!

15. Air Popper
I bought an air popper years ago. It's not a greasy. I've never cared for the microwave popcorn, so rarely ate it. Now it's finding good kernals to pop. That Orville Rickenbacher (or whatever his name is) used to be better than the bagged house brands. But I guess some executive needed another yacht, and made them use the grocery store house brand rejects. Next time I'm near Whole Paycheck, I'll have to remember to see what they have.

16. I used just a little
Edited on Sun Aug-10-08 09:54 AM by hippywife
canola oil and it wasn't greasy at all. I only drizzled the tiniest bit of butter on it, too.

I bought some organic in my local grocery. I try not to patronize Whole Foods unless it's for some odd thing I just can't get anywhere else.

:hi:

19. Suggestion: Try popping it with olive oil
It gives a wonderful nutty flavor. Regular (not virgin) has the best flavor.

17. air popper dries it out too much
if you really don't want any grease use a microwave popper. It wastes a LOT of kernels but the texture difference between that and air popped would be worth it to me. When I used to do it that way I found myself just using the no popping grease as an excuse to add more butter instead, so I went back to the old fashioned stove top method.

To me, air popped is way too close to styrofoam, even a ton of butter doesn't fix it.
