omg this dog will not shut up.
i am dogsitting for my daughter's dog. he is a cute little benji-like thing. he has been here for several visits, and has always been a good boy while visiting. i have 3 dogs, and they all enjoyed playing together.
but now i have him for 4 days, and holy shit, he is barking about everything. i gave them all chew things, and instead of chewing his, he is barking at the other dog.
i have a big yard, and i could put them all out, but he barks at every leaf that moves out there. they all went completely spastic when one of the neighborhood dogs went by. not just barking, but snarling and biting.
i can put him in the crate, and cover it up, and he quiets down. i suspect if i tried to keep him in there for 4 days, he would start barking again sooner or later.

argh
what am i gonna do with him?
at least now i appreciate the fact that my little loudmouth terriers could be worse.

1. Maybe a little
peanut butter? Should keep his little yap busy for awhile.

Don't mean to laugh at your predicament. I'd be going apeshit since I really, really enjoy quiet.

4. Gosh sounds like my mothers dog
That I was dogsitting a few weeks ago. A sheltie. Sheltie's have two main pleasures in life..running in circles and BARKING. Especially at my mom's parakeet.
My suggestions for treats to keep him busy/quieter based on him is a pigs ear to chew on, or the frozen treat "frosty paws". But the best one, is to get one of those chew toys that has a hole in the center and stuff it with peanut butter...
Sympathies...

6. Maybe a muzzle, at least for a part of each day?
I don't think that muzzles are considered to be inhumane, but I don't know since I don't have a dog and have never used one.

(If they hurt the animal, please disregard my suggestion.)

8. muzzles don't stop barking
just biting. not feeling like having to spend money on this little clown, either.
maybe i will see if he can keep up with me on a bike. if i run the little bugger around for a while, i think he will be too tired to cause trouble. or so says cesar. (the dog whisperer)

11. Take the dog for a walk around the neighborhood
If you just put a dog in a yard, he'll think that he has to protect it. If you show him the layout of the neighborhood, he might not feel so threatened when other dogs walk by.

Dogs get bored, and walking around exercises their mental faculties as they imprint the neighborhood.

12. you are correct, of course
he does know his way around the 'hood. they only live a few blocks away and have walked here several times.
he is a little settled right now because i put him on his leash and put him on a stay by my chair. tried to get him to down without the leash, but no go. did the instant popup routine. he seems to know that i have the upper hand here with him on the leash.

will try to find the time to walk a couple of them later. what a pack, tho. he is just stirring the shit.
