I'm no engineer, but I always guessed it was something about sound "leaking" out the back of the TV.
It was the worst when we lived in a log home with loft bedrooms. You couldn't hear shit with the TV right in front of you in the living room, but the acoustics made the sound BLAST upstairs as the sound traveled up the wall and into the bedroom. I never did understand loft bedrooms. We extended the bedrooms' floors to fill in the space (only 3 or 4 ft.) as soon as we could.
