What is your favorite mixed drink?
I'm not necessarily interested in one fantastic drink that a bartender made you in an island resort somewhere, but more of something that you drink all the time on a daily/weekly basis.

Just curious what the mixed drinks are of the DU crowd.

I tend to switch around somewhat. For a long time I drank Stoli and soda on the rocks with lime, then Manhattans, now I drink a lot of Americano's and Negroni's. I was never a big Martini fan but now I may reconsider after using top shelf gin in the Negroni.

4. Margarita on the rocks, not frozen. Blue Hawaiian, gin and tonic, Salty Dog.
I have never tried a Mojito. If Sangria counts as a mixed drink (some versions do have rum or brandy in them) then that would be my second favorite

20. Campari Royale...sweet (as opposed to bitter)
1/2 oz. Campari
1 1/2 oz. Gran Marnier
3 oz. OJ
Ice

Stir and garnish with an orange wheel.

Normally, it's Gran Marnier and Campari in equal ratios, one ounce of each. Bitter is more Campari than Gran Marnier. Adjust to taste.

:applause: for the Negroni and Americano too. Campari is an acquired taste.

A real Margarita consists of ONLY three things:

That's it. Anything else is a poseur fake, and likely to make you throw up after drinking three of them.

26. Don't drink many.
I tend to prefer wine or decent liquor. For me, mixed drinks are a thing I order when I feel like being silly. Like last time I went out with friends and we went bar/club hopping (something I rarely do, I might add) the first place we went to, I got scotch. Straight. No ice, nothin'. Just a nice, manly scotch. Then the next club we went to, I asked the bartender to make me the fruitiest, girliest drink he had. Then at the next place, I told the bartender about my two previous drink choices, and told her to surprise me with something else. So she mixed me a drink that was mostly just lemonade and scotch. :P I thought her creativity deserved a good tip. It was actually pretty good, come to think of it.

Then again, this was my fourth drink of the night so my judgement may have been a little off by then... :)

32. I like a real on the rocks daiquiri, what is a Negroni?
(is that spelled right?) but nobody makes them right. I loved mojitos for a while but they are pricey and now made with fake shit. A real margarita on the rocks is good but I make the best I have ever had. Other rum based girl-drinks like fruit daiquiris or pina coladas are tasty. Hard to beat gin and tonic when it is hot and humid.

I don't drink much of anything very regularly anymore so I should just shut up and stop making myself thirsty.

37. A Negroni is a variation on an americano.
It was named after the Count Camillo Negroni of Florence, Italy who really liked americanos but couldn't be seen drinking such a plebeian common drink in public...so he had his own version invented and named it after himself.

It's Gin, Vermouth and Campari in equal parts served over ice with a orange twist. It's really bitter and best as an aperitif. Also, definitely a summer sipping beverage.

i find the Negroni to be less bitter than an Americano. A good gin will take some of the bitterness out of the Campari.

96. I haven't found a lot of difference in the sweet vermouths
and I've never tried any pricey stuff.

I only use sweet vermouth in cocktails, and then mostly in Negronis, and the campari would overpower any fine points of an elegant sweet vermouth (assuming one even exists, and I don't think it does).

I would bet shitloads of money that the bottle in my cupboard now is a Rossi or a Gallo.

in 32 and 64 oz. glass bottles in the organic-foods, produce, or high-end juices section of your supermarket. (Basically, it's near the Odwalla, Naked, or Pom juices typically. Expect to pay an arm and a leg though. Specialty juices have low sell-through and thus a high-markup.)

Edit: I just noticed you're a fellow nutmegger. Price Chopper carries a lot of specialty juice...it's in the produce section, usually down on one end in a refrigerated case.

78. Price Chopper.
It's a grocery chain based out of Schenectedy: family-owned, high-quality products, pioneering (first 24-hour supermarket, first to offer customer loyalty program, first to offer gasoline discount, first mainstream supermarket to stock organic offerings in all stores,...), big on community-involvement and charity...We have them here in Hartford, I've seen them in the NJ and NYC suburbs and as far south as PA. I just checked though...the closest to New Haven would be Southington or Torrington. That's a hike. I would expect they'll be expanding down your way soon...they only opened upstate in the past 5-10 years and are already dominating the market.

81. Not really...
more in the mainstream supermarket market with the likes of Shaw's, Stop and Shop and ShopRite...just doing it with a focus on innovation and quality instead of lower prices. (The prices aren't bad either...) If you can't tell...I'm very enthusiastically-satisfied with my grocery-shopping experience there. It's the only supermarket I've ever been in where the store brand is consistently as good (or better) than name-brand and I can find veg*n dietary-staples (like vital wheat gluten and miso, quality produce) without having to ask them to order them.

They still carry the generic grocery items and brands. (i.e. hothouse tomatoes, Kellogg's cereals) Also, not quite as comprehensive as "Whole Paycheck"...unlike Whole Foods, you have 2 or 3 choices of ricemilk brands instead of 20. Still...it's better than grocery shopping was for me 3 years ago when I could expect to consistently have to make stops at three different places to get all my groceries.

My husband drinks Martinis and Manhattans. Some of my family is so into wine that they actually travel to France once a year to stock up. I can't tell a $5.00 bottle of wine from a $100.00 bottle, so I tell them not to waste it on me.

My favorite drink? Mudslide. Tastes like a chocolate milkshake! Mmmm. :9

55. A dirty secret...
(can't tell a $5 bottle from a $100 bottle): Neither can most people. Some researcher did a study earlier this year where they gave people sample cups of wine.

1/3 the people got a cheap wine and an expensive wine labeled with the correct prices.
1/3 got a cheap wine and an expensive wine with the prices reversed.
1/6 got two cups of the cheap wine with differing price tags.
1/6 got two cups of the expensive wine with differing price tags.

90%+ of subjects rated the wine they thought was more expensive as better. As someone who took sommelier training...I already knew this. So do most restaurateurs. On the average restaurant wine list...out of the top three most expensive wines...one is typically a 100%+ markup on a cheap wine. Really. Even from an honest retailer/broker, price in wine reflects scarcity more often than quality. Only the rarest most expensive bottles typically have both.

There are an increasing number of vintners producing high-quality wines...there is an exploding market of wine speculators who buy up bottles of cheap wine across the spectrum because if even one wine they have is highly-rated (90 or better by Wine Spectator) they can make a tidy profit by marking up something they bought cheap and reselling.

Stoli Vanilla, OJ and a Splash of Cran if I'm feeling festive

Dark n Stormies (Jamiaican Rum and Ginger beer), Mojitos (Real ones) and Mangoritas if the establishment allows.

66. Not much of a drinker but
in the heat of summer I enjoy a Fresca (original citrus) mixed with vanilla rum. Tastes a lot like a dreamsicle.

in winter I prefer an adult coffee beverage - iced coffee mixed with equal parts creme de cacao, tequila rose and coffee liqueur. Topped with whipped cream of course.

The two stand bys are Crown mixed with vanilla coke or plain old rum and coke.

70. Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster
According to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the best drink in existence is the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster; it says that the drink's effect is similar to having one's brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick. The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster has also been described in the novel as the alcoholic equivalent to a mugging: expensive and bad for the head.

71. I"m not really a mixed drink fan, I prefer cocktails, but every now and again I do a rum and coke
or variant thereof.

I just find mixed drinks to be rather lackluster in both taste and genesis.

But alas the Bacardi Corporation and a few assholes in Florida make sure we continue to have laws that stop me from drinking that rum cuz it funds evil evil communism

So I settle for Captain Morgan. Bacardi tastes like piss as far as I'm concerned.
