1. In "Europeans", you should modify that as "Germans"
Edited on Mon Aug-04-08 04:37 PM by MrScorpio
I have to point out that, although I love them, Germans have really poor taste in popular music.

The French, Luxembourgers, Belgians, English and Dutch have a much better taste in my opinion. I always had to leave Germany to find decent stuff on the radio

2. That's odd because the Germans are one of the few countries that can actually field rock bands.
I'm leaving the UK and Ireland out of this whole discussion because as native speakers of English they fit more easily into the rock world than countries that speak other languages. Germany has such greats as Kraftwerk, die toten Hosen, Die Aerzte, and Rammstein. So what's the deal with Kelly Family?

5. Kraftwerk is more popular outside of Germany than in Germany
Edited on Mon Aug-04-08 04:38 PM by MrScorpio
That fact blew my mind. A lot of contemporary Germans never heard of them.

I think that the fact that the blues explosion didn't hit Germany as it did the UK and the Jazz phenomena never did as it did France and Italy, created a musical Zone of Unfunkiness in Germany.

Now I have to say that there are obvious exceptions, i.e., Jazzanova and others. But as a general rule, Germans love bland music. The Rock in Germany has a definite Nordic quality all its own.

Only in an environment like this, can something like the Kelly Family prosper.

9. Once again the Germans seek their Sonderweg. I believe that Germans are capable of good music.
Even this DDR State sponsored folk-rock band is not without it's charms.

The important thing is that they definitely don't import (this is how they got Kelly Family and Heitje) and also not to try to imitate outside forms but cultivate their own traditions instead.

If they imitate they end up with stuff like Seeed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9b2j2g42nQ

Whereas if they develop their own things they get stuff like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRCGSGh3ZiM&feature=related

10. Yes, they are capable of really great music
But, unfortunately they're late comers

The French, Brits and Italians have been making funk inspired music since the sixties, I guess that it'll take the Internet age to bring the funk to Germany

11. Germany also has Accept, the greatest band in the world
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy9tvzXgEG4

Accept didn't get the respect it deserved for two reasons: all the homoerotic imagery in their songs, and Udo Dirkschneider is the ugliest man in show business.

18. Not Irish...
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 04:03 PM by GleninDublin
Don't blame us! They're Irish-American, based in Europe. Think they were a folk band but decided to exploit the teen market in central Europe.

Yeah, they're pretty godawful as a 'pop' band, though I believe they had a decent reputation when they were still in folk. (Yes, I am embarrassed to know all this, but they had a very brief spell of popularity in Ireland when they lived here.)
