Would you take all your sick time? Barely work and goof off? Leave in a huff at the end?

Or would you continue to be a dutiful employee, coming in working hard and smiling as they show you the door?

2. goof off a bit but for the most part suck it up
and walk out with a smile. Burning bridges might be fun, but hardly worth it

keep a stiff upper lip, do the best you can do and ask for an exit interview and ask whomever the boss folks are if you could use them as a reference for future employment. If at all possible ask them for a written recommendation as you leave. Good Luck!!

Edited because humans don't have stiff upper chins.

I agree that as much fun as it might be to screw off etc, you want to leave with a good record, a reference and letter of recommendation etc, etc....especially in this economy, lawd knows jobs are tough enough to come by these days.

6. I'd do my job as that is what I owe them and do it well
as I always did. It is always helpful to have a good recommendation

I might even just walk out the door ahead of time. Why bother when the gratitude you get is a layoff? Besides, you have job hunting to do.

Kudos to those of you with better attitudes than mine, but job-hunting has put me in a really foul mood lately.

8. At my current job... replace the (*&%ing company mandated 'easy listening' CD with something else.
Edited on Mon Aug-04-08 03:48 PM by DarkTirade
Preferably something a bit more hardcore, like european heavy metal or Shostakovic at his most depressed.

My last job... I probably woulda hopped on a conveyor belt and taken a ride. :)

10. Spend the first week getting written letters of recommendation.
Spend the next two weeks doing as little as possible without getting in trouble.

Then, on my last day, I would do the most bad-ass burn out possible in the parking lot on my way out.

13. The second option. Just to have a little pride. I've had some shit jobs, but
have always done those jobs as well as I could, even though they were shit jobs.

I suppose that's kind of a pointless attitude, but there it is.

14. Week 1: Ask for letters of recommendation.
Weeks 2 & 3: If I got the letters I requested, work hard and be cheerful as I was and leave with a smile. If I didn't, then dick around, play video games on company time (unless it's a job in the video game industry, in which case, I'd work hard to put memory leaks into the code), leave poop under the handle of the boss's car door, and maybe leave ahead of time.

In other words, it depends.

16. Depends on if there is any chance of a rehire.
If there is a possibility that it is not a permanent layoff, then I'd be as dutiful as ever. It'd be a real bitch to piss them all off and then not get re-hired in a couple of months.

If this is a permanent job loss then I'd be hard pressed not to burn any accrued sick time. If they won't pay vacation due at termination, then I'd take that now, too. In doing that, however, you have got to realize that you may screw yourself out of a reference on down the road.

Let them pay you to look for a new job, but do it carefully.

18. Don't burn any bridges. Do a good job till the end.
Most places will pay your vacation time at the end anyway.

If they don't pay your unused sick time as well, I'd probably be sick for a couple days.

don't burn any bridges. I wouldn't go out of my way to work overtime/extra, but I would still try to be professional during my normal working hours.

19. be sure to get all your doctor and dentist stuff done if you have insurance, while
you STILL have insurance. Get your teeth cleaned, buy glasses if you need them and have a vision plan.

If you have a flex plan see how much you would have in it at the end of the year. Now, get all your prescriptions filled, buy a big supply of contact lens supplies, OTC pain killers, allergy meds and whatnot and turn it in on the flex.

My flex plan paid me $1600 in February which was the max amount my plan would have accrued by December 31. I only had about $200 in the account at that time. But the FEDERAL law on this stuff says they have to pay out the max if you have an expense. I had a lot of dental work done and a bunch of costs left over after the dental plan did all it was going to do. So I filed all those Dental Explanations of Benefits to the Flex plan and they sent me a big check.

THEY CAN'T ASK YOU FOR IT BACK IF YOU LEAVE, ARE LAID OFF OR THEY FIRE YOU. FEDERAL LAW. I did this twice when I knew I was going to be laid off so I made sure I did everything I could that would qualify and submitted it, even though I didn't have much in the account at the time. Had like a 2 year supply of ibuprofen and contact lens stuff

Most folks don't know this so I am just sayin'.

I wouldn't take the whole time in sick leave, but I might take a few of them, since you won't get paid for them when you leave, whereas you probably will be paid for the unused vacation days. Make sure you will be paid for them then let them sit because you can use the money.

(you don't even want to know how many times my fingers typed 'teh' instead of the in this post)

Here's a list of shit I've done:

Rack up overtime

Steal everything that isn't bolted down

Fuck off on the internet (like I'm doing now)

Cash in my time off

In the case of getting fired in California, the law states if they mess up your final paycheck or any time off cashed in, you will be paid a full day's work every day until the situation is resolved.

Thank you, GE, for paying me for 6 weeks while I sat on my ass and watched CHiPs while you dickwads figured out how to pay me for 10 days of vacation. :)

28. hey! i got laid off from GE too
but you know what? That name on my resume is GOLDEN. I've gotten so much mileage otu of that stint it's not even funny.

And if the hiring folks are previous GE employees? Automatic Free pass for having done your time.

27. I get laid off pretty regularly
or used to.

I do the dutiful employee thing. But then again, in my business (IT), what goes around comes around, and if you are a contractor - leaving on good terms could mean coming back in a new position a few months later, or going on to a new gig with glowing recommendations from your previous gig.
