Advice on resuscitating Sculpey?
We have a block of Sculpey that has gone dry, much to our annoyance. We bought it in the last few months from a local craft store, and already it's getting a bit crumbly and hard to work with.

Does anyone know any easy methods for restoring it to a workable state? I'd hate to throw out the whole block if we don't have to.

1. How'd it dry up? I've had a slug of Sculpey for 10 years and
it's still supple (unlike my ancient skin) -- and I live in Colorado.

2. To be honest, we're both puzzled
We had it in a drawer in our dining room, and I swear that we only bought it about three months ago. I have no idea how long it was on the shelf at the store, but the package was sealed, so it shouldn't make a difference, right?

I have another brick of Sculpey that I bought probably 15 years ago, and it has become rather powdery. It was in our attic for much of that time, so IMO it's not unreasonable that it should have dried somewhat.

But this new stuff? Frustrating!

We didn't keep the receipt, of course, and it's a small store that likely won't take a return of partial merchandise, so I think we're kind of stuck. We'll probably order our next batch online.

Good luck with your skin, by the way!

3. You need a little bottle of Sculpey clay softner
I've heard mineral oil works in a pinch. Just use a few drops at a time.

4. I had no idea that such a product existed--silly me!
I think that we have mineral oil somewhere around here, but I'll check if that craft store has the softener.

Thanks for the tip!

8. See? I find that to be the point where such wisdom breaks down.
I have a friend who gobbles up every word from the Lama that he can find. When I gave him the URL to the story about his link to the CIA, my friend almost disowned me.
