What's your best advice for getting out of a speeding ticket?
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 07:21 PM by LostInAnomie
Mine would be to just admit you were speeding. Cops have heard all the excuses and know they are almost always bullshit. Sometimes they are surprised by honesty.

7. Guess what... I beat TWO of them
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 07:32 PM by MrScorpio
First off, get a lawyer. The retainer you pay could save you a lot more cash in the long run. Second go to court. A lot of tickets are thrown out because the defendant shows up and the cop doesn't. If the charge isn't reckless driving and the cop no-shows and you do, chances are you'll get off.

For your plea, if your case is heard, follow your lawyer's advice.

If you're found guilty, file an appeal. Again, your lawyer is key.

If you have a clean record and everyone feels that it's too much trouble to get cash out of you, the state may just drop the case.

Remember, the DA and court depends on SUCKERS no to show up and not to fight. It's easy money for them. Pretty much speeding tickets are a money making scheme.

What you need to show is that your money and your good driving record won't be an easy target.

9. Nothing works for me, but
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 08:19 PM by UTUSN
more than one woman I know (I was there) just turned up pretty eyes and said, "I'm sorry..."

And a couple of dudes have said (also DRUNK, DUI) they broke down and cried and told the officer they had a shitload of problems, divorce, job...

One other dude said he bribed the cop and went on his merry way.

I've never gotten one and rarely deserved one, so no advice FROM me, but I'm sure I'll GET some about picking my acquaintances better.

16. Honesty
has ALWAYS worked for me. Seriously, no bullshit, just honesty.

Granted, I did spend a weekend in the county jail once for speeding, but I WAS clocked at 133mph...:P

But, all the OTHER times I have been in the close proximity to a cop at well over 100mph, I have received a warning. I did not try to come up with a slick excuse, just told the truth.

28. Honesty is the best policy in this situation.
I got popped a few years back going 79 in a 55. I honestly thought I was still in a 65 zone (yes, still speeding, but not so egregiously). When the officer came up to my window, he asked me how fast I was going, and I told him, "When I crested the hill and saw you, I was going 79." The officer told me he had, indeed, clocked me at 79, so he gave me a verbal warning and told me to "try and keep the speed down, OK?"

17. I tried a lot of different things and none of them worked:
ME: "Hey, so my neighbor Mike _____ is also a local cop. We're FRIENDS." (this is true, btw)

COP: "That's nice. He's a friend of mine, too."

then.....

ME: "But my birthday is in two days!" (this was also true at the time)

COP: "Happy Birthday!", as he hands me the ticket.

:eyes:

Bottom line: our local cops have their quota of tickets to give and are absolutely unmerciful.

18. Defensive driving course.
Sure you plead nolo and then pay court costs but you don't get hit with higher insurance. In Texas, they'll let you do it if you were less than 25 mph over and there were no other citations. And you can only do it once in a year. This will be the third time I've used it. I end up with a discount on my insurance for a while that almost equals the cost of the court fees.

19. Plea-bargain it.
Usually, you can knock down the number of points that go against your license, maybe knock down the fine, in exchange for defensive driving courses and such - should save you from a hit on your insurance.

but they didn't know that) and got off.

The one time I was stopped, I wasn't speeding. They picked up the idiot next to me and nailed me for it. I took it to court and won.

26. Pull over in a safe area for the cop
a well-lit parking lot is ideal. Roll down the windows, stay belted in, put your hands on the wheel and turn on the inside light.

The two times I've been pulled over were all on the same long-distance trip, I had NY tags driving through Tennessee going back home to Arkansas. I had my cat, who hated car rides, screaming the entire time. (The vet up there didn't believe me when I said she needed tranquilizers, not anti-nausea meds.)

So I was going 23 miles over the speed limit the first time I got pulled over.

"Do you have a medical emergency?"

"Only a mental health one, Officer. I'm moving back home to Arkansas, my cat hates cars, and screams the entire time. I was trying to cut down the time I'd have to listen to her. I'm sorry."

"Well, here's your ticket, slow down, it'll be better for you and your cat."

-------

Second time I was only going 12 miles over, same thing. At least I did slow down.

(ETA: It was obvious I was moving, I had the car full of stuff and a cat carrier in the car. I believe going as fast as I was the first time was probably grounds for a reckless driving ticket and/or impounding the vehicle, so I may have gotten off easily.)

36. well, the last time I was pulled over....
It was the first time I had been away from BB Maine-ah and she was 5 months old. I was speeding, and I went through a stop sign. I was crying (extremely hormonal) didn't get to pump at work, so I was crying, and pumping, and driving all at the same time (sorry, my boobies were really full and sore) I told him exactly what was going on, showed him the pump and all. He let me go. I don't recommend driving under those conditions btw... but...just a verbal warning to take it safe so I actually got home to my BB.

37. Radar guns are notoriously inaccurate
If they measure your speed at any kind of angle from the direction they are pointing the gun, it will not register the correct speed. A dozen other things can affect the reading as well. The police should have a procedure for regular calibration of the radar gun; ask in court if it has been calibrated recently and to produce the certificate verifying that has been.

If they have no procedure for calibrating the radar guns, they have no way of verifying the accuracy of their instruments.

38. My advise would be
to be honest, and be direct with why you don't "need" the ticket. Police are people to, and playing on their emotions sometimes works.

I was a State Trooper for several years and can say, I never lost a ticket that went to court. You may get lucky with some officers who don't show or who arent prepared though. I have let many people off though, and would site them for something like seatbelts instead if I could to let them avoid points. One other thing I did was, when on the interstates, I would reduce their tickets down so it became just a fine.. no points.

If people I stopped looked like the didn't have much money, I'd usually let them go with a written warning. dunno if thats right or wrong but I did have to live with myself.

Edited on Sun Aug-03-08 03:41 PM by HEyHEY
It arouses contempt in the cop heart. Make the bastard chase you.... he will follow. But he won't know what to make of your blinker signal that says you are about to turn right. This is to let him know you're pulling off for a proper place to talk. It will take him a moment to realize that he's about to make a 180 degree turn at speed, but you will be ready for it. Brace for the g's, and fast heel-toe work.
