I have to disown my sister...she did the most unthinkable thing EVER...

...my mom told me that she took all the cats she and her husband had accumulated (because they refused to spend the money to have them spayed/neutered) and dropped them off at the dump...all 7 of them...one of the little darlings only had three legs. All my cats were once strays that someone else threw away....how she and I share the same blood is BEYOND me.

She is a self proclaimed CHRISTIAN and she sees me as a heathen bordering on possibly bein' the anti-christ because of my views (which in an extreme emotional state of complete mental exhaustion in early January of 2001..I screamed at her in her church parking lot and she had me detained in a psych ward for a week over that instead of thrown in jail) but I let that go and forgave her...I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive her for this...nor look her in the face again. :evilfrown:

don't most dumps have only limited (easy) access to the actual dump area? Can you possibly go to where she dropped them off and try to find/call them, or leave food to entice them? This may be a stupid question if the dump is huge and if there are lots of animals around there....but I wonder if they may still be alive. How long ago did this happen? If it is recent, a humane society may be willing to help you and may have some ideas.

....it's been a week since I heard about it so it's probably been even longer since she did it..it's also been at around hundred degrees with heat index over 110 during this time as well and no rain...so I seriously doubt they had half a chance of surviving the heat alone. The dump bulldozes all the garbage into huge holes and covers them up...and the land it's on is located next to a large wildlife/hunting refuge.

While housecats aren't self-sufficient and they are at terrible danger, if it's only been a week I'd go looking for them for sure. They might be hungry and a little worse for wear, but it's not too late by any means. Is there a reputable no-kill rescue group that you can contact for advice/help? Or you might be able to trap them in humane traps and take them to a shelter yourself? (You can get serviceable traps at Home Depot or Lowes in a pinch.)

If someone called our group about a situation like that, we'd have volunteers down there with traps in under 24 hours... I'm in PA, so I can't personally help these guys...

All either strays or rescues, plus a large dog.

There have been times that ThinkBlue1966 and I have lived on ramen noodles and tuna so we could buy food for the animals and the kidlet. We're staying in our dump of a trailer because I can't find anyone who meets my high standards to take the dog, and I refuse utterly to give him to anyone who doesn't meet every one of those standards.

We had a cat who got pregnant twice this year, because although we couldn't bear to leave her out on the streets where we found her, we didn't have the money to get her spayed, and we were without AC for the first part of the summer--so the doors and windows had to stay open. She got out. But we're taking responsibility for the kittens. We'll have them until they have Real homes--good ones. In the meantime, we now have air conditioning, so the cats stay inside the house.

We've been through a lot for the sake of these animals. I've had to use my own knowledge plus the internet to save one cat's life *twice* because she had skin infections that needed antibiotics and we had no money for a vet. We treated her with human antibiotics, after researching the dosing scale. I stayed up night after night to give her doses by hand every four hours when she was too weak to eat. I bottle-fed a seven-month old cat who was too weak and sick to eat solid food, with KMR. She recovered and is alive and healthy today.

Is it wrong to take in animals during the times that we're broke and can't afford the Vet? Perhaps. But (IMHO) it's even more wrong to leave them to starve or be hit by a car. We do the best that we can, and although our pets aren't as well-off as the pets of other people, we're all going through the same hardships together. If they sometimes have to eat cheap pet food, well, we sometimes have to live on ramen noodles and lunch meat. But we would never, never abandon them. We have gone without to buy their Frontline fleas meds, and would do so again if necessary. They are OUR responsibility.

I have little sympathy or tolerance for people who abandon. Anyone who isn't willing to go through at least *some* hardship for the sake of an animal, if it comes to that, shouldn't have an animal in the first place.

One of my best friends had two dogs; a black lab and a beagle/ lab mix. He got a job out of state and he and his wife decided that moving the dogs along with their two kids was too much trouble, so he had the dogs euthanized and bought the kids a new yorkie puppy for Christmas to "make up for it". They said that the dogs they killed were just "too big and too old" to take with them (one was 7, the other was 9). I was so sick over it that I told them off. I also told one of our coworkers, who told the rest of our coworkers what they had done. Pretty soon my ex-friend couldn't get a job at any studio on the west coast because everyone knew that he was the "dog killer". He blamed me for that, but I just told him that he shouldn't have killed his daughter's dogs to begin with!
