But it was at the end of my first marriage and my ex-wife had turned into a monster.

I was on a long business trip in South Africa and ran into somone I had had a crush on years before, a wonderful artist who was also suffering through the end of her long term relationship. My nyatsi (that's South African slang for lover) and I had a wonderful, healing month together, that reminded me that it was possible to be happy again, and shortly after I got back to the U.S., my wife and I split, which was one of the best things that ever happened in my life.

The last few years of my marriage were tumultuous to say the least. My career was in a tailspin, my health was suffering, my wife (who promised to love me for richer and for poorer) made it clear that I wasn't making enough money to cover the expenses of the lifestyle she was accustomed to, and summarily ended any and all physical activity. Add that to my already confused state, it was pretty much inevitable. After about a year and a half of the cold shoulder, I tested the waters of my curiosity. It wasn't the "right" thing to do, and I'm not particularly proud of my decision, but I don't dwell on it anymore.

On edit: The "technically" caveat is because I sometimes kid myself that the relationship was already over... But we were, in fact, still married.

Before I met my wife and was dating, I was sleeping with two girls at the same time but was not in a serious relationship with either.

However there was time when I was single that I was sleeping with a married friend, so I not really cheated on my S/O but I have contributed to it so to speak back when I was young and dumb. To clarify a little, the marriage I was in the middle of was a joke, the got married in high school because she got pregnant and were never really happy together.

Having feelings, sexual an/or otherwise are normal human functions. It is self-respect and respect for others that matters and, sadly, a large amount of people don't these days. It truly IS a shame, because it is those forms of respect that people seem to forget in the process. :(

And I haven't even kissed another woman. There are lots of reasons not to cheat, but I shudder at the thought that my stupidity might cause my wife to catch a disease that has no cure. I couldn't live with that, and she has never done anything to deserve it.

I have a young acquaintance who tells me about her relationships. I saw her yesterday for the first time in a month. She had learned that she had hepatitis C. That's scary stuff. But no matter the disease, even curable ones, I can't visit that upon a woman who has been so loyal to me.

Safety issues aside, she's treated me too well to be betrayed, and I hope I'm never that stupid.

When I was 17 years old, and still a virgin, I was on a worksite on my only hard hat job ever. We were talking about marriage, and I said that when I get married I'll never cheat. The guys all laughed and said "Yes you will. You get tired of the same p____ all the time." As a virgin, it seemed impossible to me that you could tire of having sex with a woman. After 25 years of marriage, I still don't understand it.
