So Indy's in the Map Chamber with that amulet on the rod, waiting for the sun to come up
And, dutifully, the sunlight blazes forth and precisely illuminates the location of The Well of Souls. Of course, those pesky Nazis are digging in the wrong spot because Toht only thought to brand himself with one side of the amulet. Way to do half a job, you goosestepper!

Anyway, here's my problem: wouldn't the amulet illuminate a different location depending on the time of year? How does Indy know that he's got the right spot, and not a spot skewed north or south by some distance?

1. There are various holes on the floor for the time of year.
He reads the floor inscriptions, checks his little translation book, and brushes off sand to find the correct time-of-year hole to place the staff.

2. Well at least the screenwriter (NOT Lucas BTW) thought of that...
But he totally missed that the staff was supposed to be about 5 feet tall (the mage said "take back one kadan")

(or maybe it was the prop guy plus the continuity person)

4. Okay--I'll buy that
I always wondered what, exactly, he was reading about just then, but I never connected it to charting the time of year.

Well played!

3. here's my Raiders WTF:
What the hell is a large Nazi military encampment doing in the suburbs of Cairo? Sure the war hadn't actually started but still, you would think the Brits would have noticed a thing like that.

5. The Brits were too busy playing cricket and quaffing quinine water
Jolly good show, that.
