It's the beginning of Harry Potter season

Just released today. The young boy seems to have the young Voldemort part down, IMHO. What say you?

As someone who has never read any of the books, I have liked all the movies... perhaps because I don't have the novels to campare them to.

Order of the Phoenix was, IMO, dragged down with too much screen time devoted to Dolores Umbrage.

I hope this one get the series back on track.

9. The reason #5 got dragged down was because of the sheer volume of the book
There was simply too much to cover in too short a time. I do like the movies, but the books are so massive in content that you could almost make two movies out of books 5 and 6, not just 7.

10. I think they really screwed up 5
They left out... stuff... that's going to make the end of 7 make no sense.

I'm thinking most specifically of the cleaning of Grimmauld Place and a certain memory...

12. I was appaled at how bad 5 was.
The asshat director cut the movie to within an inch of its life, like he had some producer screaming over his shoulder, "We only have two hours!" It drove me fucking crazy. He left out some incredibly important information and bum rushed his way through some vital scenes that gave deep insight into Harry and Snape.

I was so pissed off after the movie I went to check who the dick director was over on IMDB -- when I saw the director had ZERO theatrical film experience and was only a BBC made-for-TV flm director, it all made sense to me.

I think his choice as director was the biggest mistake the franchise has ever made. Bring back Alfonse Cauron!

24. Get used to it, because he appears to be permanent.
Unfortunately.

I have a sinking feeling he isn't going to do either part of Deathly Hallows the justice that a Peter Jackson, Cuaron or del Toro would have.

27. Ah crap. :(
Damn that sucks. I wasn't a big fan of "Goblet" but I have never outright hated a Potter film like I did "Order". The last book is going to take a seriously skilled director to make it work -- it was a tough book and will make a tougher movie. :( I just don't think that asshat has the chops to do it.

Jackson proved you could take books with enormous scope and make great, LONG movies that people will clamour for.

"Potter" is this generation's "Rings" books -- too bad the producers didn't have the courage to really allow for the full theatrical expression of those books. :(

13. I agree
The first part was fine, then at the end it was "Wham, bam, thank you ma'am" and it was over.

That movie could easily have been three hours long. Lord of the Rings did it, why couldn't they?

4. Been waiting for this, thanks!
The young Tom Riddle looks excellent, even more evil than the teenage/20-something version in Chamber of Secrets.

At first I thought they made Dumbledore too young, but he's 50ish at the orphanage, vs 110+ in Harry's time. Good job, makeup people!

Michael Gambon seems to be coming into the Dumbledore role well. I like him better here than in the earlier films.

Seems like Harry should be putting his face into a misty swirling gas though, not clear water.

Thanks again!

5. Agree, the substance in the pensieve is supposed to be halfway
between gas and liquid in appearance. They got that wrong.

But the young Tom Riddle looks great, and younger Dumbledore, too. I agree, Gambon seems to be growing into the role; I REALLY compared him unfavorably with his incomparable predecessor in the Dumbledore role for his first few films.

6. I think Gambon's a better Dumbledore than the other dude
when seen in the perspective of book 7.

You can sort of see Gambon's Dumbledore having a lot of hidden sides.

18. Um, yes.
Have to disagree with you totally here. Harris played "generic old man" not "wise and powerful wizard". Like he didn't even find out anything about the character. (although part of the fault lies with the director of the first two movies)

Gambon I liked better, but I pined for Ian McKellen (as I had from the start).

Lately Gambon has done much better. His battle with Voldemort in #5 was most convincing.

22. Here's what it is:
They made a BIG mistake starting the films before the series was written.

Every problem with the films can be traced to that.

Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 11:50 AM by tigereye
Gambon is a wonderful actor, but he's a little too loud and cranky for me in this role, and doesn't seem as smart. I guess I think of Dumbledore as more of a scholar, and that's how Harris came across.

King Arthur, singing McArthur Park (or however it was), um, yeah. I've gotten used to Gambon but he seems too short and stumpy compared to Harris.

20. Oh this is kinda cool...
The kid playing Tom Riddle is Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, Ralph Fiennes' nephew. And this is his first (maybe second) film (two films so far, both due out in 2008).

This group overlaps with a Twilight fan group, and they're also going nuts right now. OMG, how did I get involved with serious fandom? :wow:

Didn't even think that existed but my 17 year old daughter is losing her mind over the new book and movie being released shortly. No one follows Harry Potter around my neighborhood but this Twilight book series has lots of fans. Either way, it's good that people of any age are reading and enjoying it.

36. I just had a long conversation with two friends,
A mom and daughter I know through the HP group, about the Twilight books. I like the characters. I like the pacing. I like many parts of the stories. But the obscessive aspects of the relationships is really disturbing. I'm not sure these books are really good for teen girls who might already be inundated with the idea that finding a relationship is all-important.

There is a lot to critique in these books. Yet despite that, I have enjoyed reading them and I'm looking forward to the 4th book.

I think the whole thing would have been much more interesting, exciting, and perhaps more balanced it was had been told from Alice's perspective instead of Bellas. :)

37. I can see what you're getting at regarding the obsessive aspects
especially between Bella and Edward, but he's also a 100 year-old vampire. That kind of time in the world, no matter what or who you are, is going to make you protective of someone because of all that you have encountered. Especially someone as Uber-klutzy as Bella...not to mention her uncanny way of attracting danger. I might feel differently about it if there weren't ever present danger, but at least it makes sense in the context of events in the story.

I will be very interested in reading Twilight from Edward's perspective in Midnight Sun.
