The Tackiness of the Christ
'JESUS' NAIL SALE

http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/18338.htm

By WILLIAM NEUMAN

February 19, 2004 -- Replicas of the nails used to hang Jesus on the cross have become the red-hot official merchandise linked to Mel Gibson's controversial new movie, "The Passion of the Christ."
Pendants made from the pewter, 2 1/2-inch nails - selling for $16.99 - all but flew out of the Christian Publications Bookstore on West 43rd Street as soon as they were put on display.

Hundreds of stores across the country will be selling licensed items tied to the movie, a graphically violent depiction of the last 12 hours of Christ's life, which opens next week on Ash Wednesday.

The souvenirs include a book, pins, key chains, coffee mugs and T-shirts.

1. Pretty soon we will be seeing stories about how these fundie wackos
are actually having those nails driven into their palms. These people are just as dangerous as the Islam fundies.

3. "This Easter, nail your girlfriend for Christ"
That's my new marketing slogan for these wonderful pendants!

4. Somebody could make big bucks selling crowns of thorns
How can these items be "trademarked" when they are part of the Christian tradition? Look for lots of knockoffs and Gibson losing if he tries to sue.

5. Yeah, Jesus pretty much blew the merchandising angle
Good thing his followers have better business sense.

I'd suggest that everyone who buys one have it driven into their frontal lobes to complete the effect.

7. Newsman Matt Drudge sank to this new low on his show last night:
(paraphrase) "Look for the Passion of the Christ to open number one with a bullet - number one with a nail."

Real funny, Matt. Bet your fundy fans got a real kick out of that one.

Bonus: Matt mentioned "Democrat Underground" in the same breath with Buzzflash, moveon.org, etc as places to look out for conspiracy theories about Rove getting Nader to run...

(Didn't say anything about felonious thunk's great impersonation, tho. Hm. )
