Severe thunderstorms swept through parts of Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts
Wednesday afternoon, generating some funnel clouds and sparking tornado warnings.


Funnel clouds were spotted off Barrington,
Rhode Island Wednesday afternoon.


The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning in Rhode Island and Massachusetts,
and a funnel cloud was spotted off Barrington. The warning was cancelled just before 5 p.m.
when conditions began to improve. However, flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings
remained in effect for a time.

The string of storms eventually made their way out to sea, but WBZ meteorologist Ken Barlow
warned of other storms that would move into the Boston area Wednesday night and into Thursday
morning. The string of storms were developing to the south and west of the Boston area.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for the Boston area Wednesday night.
Thursday was also expected to be a drencher with heavy rains expected throughout the day.

"It's going to rain on and off pretty much all day Thursday," Barlow said.

Around 4 p.m. Wednesday, trained weather spotters saw a water spout off Barrington Beach,
weather service officials said. The cloud was moving northeast at 40 miles an hour into Massachusetts.
It made its way through Taunton and moved through Marshfield before starting to head
out to sea around 5:30 p.m.

WBZ meteorologist Ken Barlow said even after the funnel clouds subside, the storms were
still considered severe and were capable of producing a tornado, Barlow said. Flash
flood warnings were issued for Eastern Norfolk, Eastern Plymouth, Northern Bristol, Southern
Bristol, Southern Plymouth, Suffolk, Western Norfolk, and Western Plymouth.

Tornado warnings were issued Wednesday afternoon for parts of Bristol, Kent and Providence
counties in Rhode island and part of Bristol County and West Central Plymouth County in
southeast Massachusetts until 5 p.m. The storms brought torrential rains in some areas
and heavy hail.

During the tornado warning, officials advised people to stay inside and take shelter in
a small interior room on the lowest floor or in the basement, and to stay away from windows.

The funnel clouds pushed into Massachusetts with winds that had the potential to exceed
100 mph. Some areas reported hail as big as 3 inches.

5. I lived in Mass for 4 years. We had maybe one storm like that.

I was amazed to learn, when I first got there, that they didn't have tornado sirens. Who doesn't have tornado sirens?! People who don't have tornadoes, as it turns out.

Thanks for the thought though, orleans! ;) It's still windy, pouring torrential rains this
morning and just had a couple of claps of thunder and a flash of lightening. A man about
7 miles from me got hit by lightening, as I was posting this OP last night! Hope it wasn't
my brother. He lives in the same town. Route 128/95 was flooded yesterday and that is
very unusual!!

Torrential thunderstorms and flooding have shut down roads and slowed down traffic in many communities.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for several counties across Massachusetts and southern
New Hampshire. WBZ meteorologists say most of the region can expect 2-to-4 inches of rain throughout the day.

Here's a man near 128, in Waltham, being rescued from flood waters.


The weather played a role in multiple accidents during the morning rush hour and left many streets flooded.
State Police have shut down the Route 3 South ramp to Route 128 North (exit 25) and the Route 128 North
ramp to Middlesex Turnpike (exit 32) in Burlington because of flooding. It's not clear when they will re-open.
The rain also flooded the commuter rail tracks in Natick, which forced the MBTA to bus passengers for part
of the morning commute.

are using a laptop. Whenever I hear thunder, I shut down the computer and pull the plugs. I have had experience with lightning striking and blowing out my satellite receiver and TV.

MEMA advises people to pay attention to weather forecasts and head inside at the first sound of thunder.

Even though a storm may be miles away, if you can hear thunder you are close enough to be hit by lighting.

If you're caught outside in a storm, squat but do not lie flat on the ground.

You can seek shelter in the woods under smaller trees.

Avoid metal objects including tractors, sheds, wires and metal fences.

Cars do provide some shelter, but you can still be injured if you're inside a car when it is struck by lightning,
especially if you are touching metal.

According to National Geographic News, about 10 percent of those struck by lightning are killed and those
who survive a strike can have lasting medical problems including heart and nerve issues as well as burns.

The National Weather Service in Gray Maine has issued a

* Tornado Warning for... southwestern Oxford County in western Maine...

eastern Carroll County in northern New Hampshire...

* until 100 PM EDT

* at 1229 PM EDT...

National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable
of producing a tornado near Ossipee... moving northeast at 45 mph.

* Some locations in the warning include but are not limited to Effingham and Fryeburg.

In addition to the tornado... this storm is capable of producing destructive straight line winds.

The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Get under a workbench or other piece
of sturdy furniture. If no basement is available... seek shelter on the lowest floor of the
building in an interior hallway or room such as a closet. Use blankets or pillows to cover
your body and always stay away from windows.

If in Mobile homes or vehicles... evacuate them and get inside a substantial shelter.
If no shelter is available... lie flat in the nearest ditch or other low spot and cover

Severe thunderstorms, and a possible tornado, left a swath of destruction through central and eastern New Hampshire late Thursday morning, leading to reports of buildings and trees down and power lines dropped onto cars.

Based on damage reports in the Epsom area, WBZ meteorologist Todd Gutner said it's likely a tornado is to blame.

A member of the SkyWarn weather watchers network confirmed to WBZ's Mish Michaels a tornado touched down in Northwood, just east of Epsom.

"I have never seen rain come down like that," Mike Hedstrom, a lifelong resident of Northwood told WBZ. "Houses are down, roofs are off, trees are down."

There are reports of people trapped in homes and in cars. There were no confirmed reports of injuries. Officials reported scores of homes damaged.

Officials are investigating reports of at least one tornado and funnel clouds in a line from Epsom and Deerfield in the central part of the state, through Wolfeboro in the north and New Durham in the east.

Emergency Management Director Christopher Pope said emergency officials are working to warn people who might still be in the path of severe weather, assessing damage and mobilizing aid.

State Emergency Management spokesman Jim Van Dongen said a house reportedly collapsed in Epsom, where the fire chief said preliminary reports indicated that 50 to 100 homes were damaged.

The National Weather Service briefly issued a tornado warning and posted severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of four counties.

New Hampshire State Police told WBZ's Karen Anderson Routes 4 and 107 in Deerfield have been shut down because of trees down in the area.

At least 8,000 homes without power in 12 + towns. Rescue having difficulty getting into area, due
to downed power lines. One person trapped in a car by power lines. One infant reported injured.

Emergency crews cut their way through downed trees Thursday to get to homes damaged and
destroyed by severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes in central and eastern New Hampshire.

One death has been confirmed.

Epsom appears to have been hit the hardest, with the fire chief saying 50-100 homes were damaged,
including one that was reduced to rubble.

Governor John Lynch declared a state emergency for five counties and called out the National Guard.

Power is out in a wide area.

Police and fire departments investigated several reports of buildings and trees down and power
lines dropped onto cars. By mid-afternoon, Concord Hospital reported one patient with unspecified
injuries.

Based on damage reports in the Epsom area, WBZ meteorologist Todd Gutner said it's possible
a tornado is to blame. Powerful straight line winds are another possibility

A member of the SkyWarn weather watchers reported seeing a tornado touchdown in Northwood,
just east of Epsom.

"I have never seen rain come down like that," Mike Hedstrom, a lifelong resident of Northwood told WBZ.

"Houses are down, roofs are off, trees are down."

There are reports of people trapped in homes and in cars. Officials reported scores of homes damaged.

Ron Olson said he saw one house demolished after taking cover in his house near Northwood Lake in Epsom.

"Across the lake, there's a house that's just completely leveled. Gone. You can't even tell what color it was," he said about two hours after a violent storm ripped off a door and destroyed his picture window.

He said he was home with his wife when pounding rain began.

"Then there was a wicked, wicked loud noise -- like a train or a jet was landing on the roof," Olson said.

About 20 miles northeast, Lise Patrick also took shelter in her home in New Durham near Merrymeeting Lake.

"I'm shaken up but alive. I guess that's all that matters," Patrick, 64, said.

"All my trees are down. Part of my deck is gone. I can see lawn chairs and furniture floating in the lake," she said.

Officials are investigating reports of at least one tornado and funnel clouds in a line from Epsom and
Deerfield in the central part of the state, through Wolfeboro in the north and New Durham in the east.

"There was a line of destruction that went from roughly Deerfield through to the Alton, Wolfeboro line," State Emergency Management spokesman Jim Van Dongen told WBZ.

"We have damage to buildings, trees down, roads closed, power lines down."

Emergency officials were seeking rescue- and chainsaw-crews, paramedics and all terrain vehicles.

A Red Cross team was responding from Maine.

The Department of Transportation told WBZ's Karen Anderson Routes 4 and 107 in Deerfield have been shut
down because of trees down in the area. Route 28 in Alton, Route 109 in Wolfeboro, and Route 152 in Effingham
