Despite reports to the contrary and even some eyewitness accounts of other food-peddling establishments in Western NY, Wegmans is the ONLY supermarket in the area.

...Okay, I tell a lie. I get Orange Glo floor polish at Tops Market because Wegmans doesn't carry it, and in a pinch I venture into the dingy little Shur-Fine in our village for bananas or hamburger buns.

There are plenty of other places near me that claim to sell food-like products, but none of them does it as well as Wegmans here in the Lehigh Valley.

No other supermarket comes close to the variety and quality of their meat and fish, as well as vegetables and other fresh ingredients. We do have a Fresh Market that has some things that are better than Wegmans, but they are also pricier.

Right now, the closest one is about 10 minutes from my house. When I move, the closest Wegmans will be about 35 minutes away, though if I go into the office (a very long drive from the new place) there's one in Bridgewater, NJ that I'll frequent.

If they were closer, I'd go to Wegmans all the time. The closest ones are all about a 20-min drive in either direction (Pittsford, Perinton, or Canandaigua). I usually make a trip once every other week or so. My little Wade's market (Shur-Fine) in Farmington has just about everything I need minus the produce and vegetarian products.

Of course, soon, I'll have a new mega-super gigantasaur delux WalMart store by the mall...to drive by on my way to Wegmans. :puke:

Twenty minutes to the Canandaigua or Geneseo Weggies. I usually stopped at the Hylan Drive store on the way home from work instead, or hit the Honeoye Shur-Fine, but sometimes I'd make the trek on a weekend, especially when I had to stock up on EVERYthing. Of course, that was when gas was only $2.00 a gallon, so it wasn't too much of a hardship.

I've shopped there all my life, so I've gotten complacent and tend to see a lot of the bad things and not appreciate the good. I just spent two weeks in California and came away with a new appreciation for Wegmans meat and produce as well as the independent Italian markets/butchers that are all over the place here.

Food Lion - nearest my house (less than 2 miles) and I will go there when I'm cooking and remember I'm out of something I need. Or if I don't feel like getting dressed and travelling very far. Why yes, they have seen me in my bathing suit, thankyouverymuch. :rofl:

Whole Foods - It's on my way home from work. I stop there on Thursdays and get myself a treat from the take out bar, or some good wine, or tea. Or if I'm shopping for a special meal I have planned.

Costco - I buy staples here, paper products, frozen foods, workday lunches and snacks,

Harris Teeter - I'm shopping there less and less because the other three pretty much have it covered. But I still go there because their artisanal breads are out of this world. And they are the only ones who have a favorite sun-dried tomato pesto.

My basic rule is: if I can't talk directly to the person in charge of product quality, I can't trust them. If I HAVE to deal with a business I can't trust, I hold my nose and go do it.

Central Market is a subsidiary of HEB so technically I shop there. We don't have the HEB supermarkets in DFW area, but they are everywhere in Austin, San Antonio and Houston.
