When we want to gorge on artery-hardening, life-curtailing crap, it has to be Ralphs or Vons.

It's just that there aren't any between me and work, although I could hit LaMad if I rerouted myself just a bit. But I'm going to start a serious revamping of my eating habits, so croissants will probably be out of my life for a while.

13. Wegmans
Despite reports to the contrary and even some eyewitness accounts of other food-peddling establishments in Western NY, Wegmans is the ONLY supermarket in the area.

...Okay, I tell a lie. I get Orange Glo floor polish at Tops Market because Wegmans doesn't carry it, and in a pinch I venture into the dingy little Shur-Fine in our village for bananas or hamburger buns.

15. I know what you mean about Wegmans being the ONLY supermarket
There are plenty of other places near me that claim to sell food-like products, but none of them does it as well as Wegmans here in the Lehigh Valley.

No other supermarket comes close to the variety and quality of their meat and fish, as well as vegetables and other fresh ingredients. We do have a Fresh Market that has some things that are better than Wegmans, but they are also pricier.

Right now, the closest one is about 10 minutes from my house. When I move, the closest Wegmans will be about 35 minutes away, though if I go into the office (a very long drive from the new place) there's one in Bridgewater, NJ that I'll frequent.

20. LoL
If they were closer, I'd go to Wegmans all the time. The closest ones are all about a 20-min drive in either direction (Pittsford, Perinton, or Canandaigua). I usually make a trip once every other week or so. My little Wade's market (Shur-Fine) in Farmington has just about everything I need minus the produce and vegetarian products.

Of course, soon, I'll have a new mega-super gigantasaur delux WalMart store by the mall...to drive by on my way to Wegmans. :puke:

31. It was like that for me when we lived in Honeoye
Twenty minutes to the Canandaigua or Geneseo Weggies. I usually stopped at the Hylan Drive store on the way home from work instead, or hit the Honeoye Shur-Fine, but sometimes I'd make the trek on a weekend, especially when I had to stock up on EVERYthing. Of course, that was when gas was only $2.00 a gallon, so it wasn't too much of a hardship.

74. I have come to take it for granted
I've shopped there all my life, so I've gotten complacent and tend to see a lot of the bad things and not appreciate the good. I just spent two weeks in California and came away with a new appreciation for Wegmans meat and produce as well as the independent Italian markets/butchers that are all over the place here.

14. I hit them all
Food Lion - nearest my house (less than 2 miles) and I will go there when I'm cooking and remember I'm out of something I need. Or if I don't feel like getting dressed and travelling very far. Why yes, they have seen me in my bathing suit, thankyouverymuch.

Whole Foods - It's on my way home from work. I stop there on Thursdays and get myself a treat from the take out bar, or some good wine, or tea. Or if I'm shopping for a special meal I have planned.

Costco - I buy staples here, paper products, frozen foods, workday lunches and snacks,

Harris Teeter - I'm shopping there less and less because the other three pretty much have it covered. But I still go there because their artisanal breads are out of this world. And they are the only ones who have a favorite sun-dried tomato pesto.

25. Shop at or settle for?
First preference: grow, glean, trade, volunteer, share - anything to keep my food out of the economy
Second preference: local farmers
Third preference: local food coop
Fourth preference: other locally owned and managed stores
Fifth preference: locally owned franchise chains (usually what's on sale vs. which store is closer)
Last preference: national chains (usually what's on sale vs. which store is closer)

My basic rule is: if I can't talk directly to the person in charge of product quality, I can't trust them. If I HAVE to deal with a business I can't trust, I hold my nose and go do it.

71. Central Market, Albertsons, Target and I get some things @ Costco
I buy most of my edibles @ CM, household supplies at the other three. However Albertson's has great buy one get one free on chicken breast, pork chops and steaks, so I stock up there. At CM I get loverly coupons which get a different free thing each week. This week I can get a free pound of chicken breast, next week seafood $10 off, etc.

Central Market is a subsidiary of HEB so technically I shop there. We don't have the HEB supermarkets in DFW area, but they are everywhere in Austin, San Antonio and Houston.

72. Right now we buy our produce at an farm/orchard up the road and go to Giant for non edibles
and Whole Foods for Dairy, Meat and Seafood and Trader Joe's for assorted goodies. We're lucky, all of these stores are within about five miles of our house. I get dried herbs and spices mail order.

Trader Joe's for most things, Shoprite for stuff we can't get there, and the Korean produce market for produce (it's really cheap and really fresh).

83. 90% Giant, 10% Trader Joe's
We had dinner a couple weeks ago at my inlaws and they had a friend over who called Trader Joe's "Traitor Joe's" The asshole made me want to go spend more money there for spite.

85. Hannaford's and our local health food store.
This past month I learned that red, yellow and orange peppers are $1.69/lb at Super Wal Mart instead of the $2.99 they sell for elsewhere, so occasionally I'll drive over there specifically for peppers and generic Zyrtec.

86. King Soopers (aka, Kroger or City Market)
I sometimes shop at Safeway, but only for small items. I've found that Safeway tends to be a good deal more expensive here.

Safeway for paper goods. They usually have Starbucks or Peets coffee on sale, which I will pick up.

90. King Soopers mostly
because it's closest to home (about 5 minutes). I also shop at Albertsons, but the one that was close (literally > a 2-minute drive. I could put a sheet of cookies in the oven, run the Albertsons for milk and be back in time to take the cookies out) to me closed, so now I have to drive a bit to get there. I don't especially like the meat at the Kings near me, so I'll go a little out of the way. Safeway is a rare thing...tend to be pretty expensive around here.

101. Ralphs (Kroger), Vons (Safeway), TJ's, Whole Foods, Bristol Farms (snooty Albertsons) & Henry's
I live within 3 miles of all these places, and if I want really cheap stuff, I can go to Big Lots or the 99 cent store which are both maybe 5 miles away.
