If my new memory chip doesn't arrive soon, I'll go on a killing spree!
As I mentioned recently, my buddy Dan just performed an upgrade to my computer. But there's one step left: raising my RAM from 128 to 512 MB. Dan ordered a memory chip, but it hasn't arrived yet. In the meantime, this goddamned thing continues to run like an arthritic turtle! :argh:

2. Windows XP or MacOS X?
With some disabling of unneeded services, XP will fit into the same memory footprint as Win2k.

I know nothing of OS X except lots of Mac users say it benefits more from having more RAM and one person said that even going from 512KB to 1GB helped (which would make OS X into OS OX...)

WHat are you using your computer for anyway? More than internet/word processing use I'd expect...

3. Under OSX and XP is a Unix Kernel
Both do disk caching with extra memory. The more memory you have the more files stay in memory.

7. XP.

And as long as I have your attention:

Does Windows XP come with Scan Disk? I've reason to suspect that my hard drive may have errors on it, but when I tried to find Scan Disk, it wasn't listed anywhere that I looked. Like under "System Tools" and "Accessories," where it always was in Windows 98.

So if there is, indeed, Scan Disk on XP, where the hell did they hide it???

8. No, it's called CHKDSK in Win XP
You can have Windows XP run it by bringing up the drive (from 'My Computer', for instance), right-click it with your mouse and select "Properties." With the properties menu up, click on the "Tools" tab and then click "Check Now" next to "Error Checking." I usually check both boxes. If it's your main system drive, CHKDSK will run upon the next reboot of your computer.

Good luck...

4. Ordered??
You mean you can't go to the nearest computer store and buy a stick of RAM? *confused look*

5. Yes! "Ordered."

From a company on-line that charges a hell of a lot less than Comp U.S.A. and the other chain stores around here that put all the independents out of business. When you're as rent-poor as I am, buying things cheaply is a must!

6. Comprende.
I paid 20 bucks for an el-cheapo 256MB stick at Fry's down here. But, if I couldn't get that deal, I was looking at ordering.
