1. oh, law
Put on a pot of coffee, get you a box of donuts, and watch some Northern Exposure dvds. Works for me.

I made that mistake a few months ago.

3. how come?
Good grief. What's wrong with Janine Turner?

I'd like to be like Ruth Anne. She's one of my heros.

4. She's apparently a rabid Republican
With some fairly bad recent plastic surgery, IMO.

6. oh fiddle dee dee
Janine Turner the individual can be and do whatever she wants, it's her life.

I love the character Maggie, she was always evolving.

Anyhoo, I still say coffee, donuts & Northern Exposure will transcend me out of a funk 99% of the time. And unless I am misreading the original sketch, someone around here appears to be in a funk!

10. DAYUM!
I am really very jealous! My seeester and I have been plotting for years to run away one day and get to the Moose Fest. When she's down in the dumps, I'll call her up and have the main theme song playing loud enough for her to hear. It always works.

I'll often say "I feel like I'm in a Northern Exposure Episode" when I'm having one of those ummm, what would you call it... 'being in the stream of life' days. Those days or times when magic just seems to happen. Dang, not really magic either, but a kind of transcendental quality.

Well, to wit: I had no idea you yourself are a NE fan(atic) and look here - you've had a beer in the Brick! Somewhere I have a photo I got off the net of the Brick decorated for Christmas. It's what I send out to people in e-mails for Christmas cards.

Awww, thanks for posting the photo, that's so neat. Hate to sound ignorant, but what's the can of beans about?

13. Back when it was in regular reruns
I used to hang out on alt.tv.northern-exp.

I must have driven past Cle Elum and Roslyn a hundred times on I-90. It's only about five miles off the interstate but that makes it a ten mile side trip and I'm usually more interested in either getting to (or out of) Seattle. Definitely worth doing at least once.

If course the inside of the Brick looks nothing like it did on the show since those scenes (and all interiors) were filmed on a soundstage. But walking around the town certainly feels a little surreal.

The beans? I have no idea, just the author's signature.

17. hmm
In 1994, I tossed a coin. One side was Asheville NC and the other was Snohomish Washington. The Asheville side landed up. I rented a cabin in the middle of no where at the end of a dirt road that had no name. If I could figure out how you post pictures on here, I'd post one of that cabin, it was really cool.

I've often wondered about how things might be had I ended up in Snohomish. But, there it is, and I've come to realize I'm dug in to the area where I am anyway. Snohomish, Cicely, Asheville... it's all a state of mind. You know?

"A human life, I think, should be well rooted in some spot of native land, where it may get the love of tender kinship for the face of the earth, for the labors men go forth to, for the sounds and accents that haunt it, for whatever will give that early home a familiar unmistakable difference amidst the future widening of knowledge. The best introduction to astronomy is to think of the nightly heavens as a lot of little stars belonging to one's own homestead." George Elliot

19. To post a picture
it must be hosted someplace. You can simply go to http://tinypic.com (no registration required) and click the browse button which opens a directory to your hard drive. Find the picture you want to share and click upload.

When it's finished, you will have a choice of addresses. Copy and paste the one that's labeled "Direct Link for Layouts."

I like nature but I also like civilization. It's a yin/yang thing for me.

21. ah hah
Thanks! That wasn't so hard... here's my cabin in the middle of no where.

It wasn't that remote, about a 20-30 minute drive to Asheville. I could drive into town for a dose of "civilization" and to hear another human voice.

By the way, in my very last post, I meant it was your sketch that looked like something out of Pattern Language.

23. Sweet
And welcome to the world of tinypic!

Oh, that wasn't my sketch. If you look at the properties (right click) you can see that it's a recent xkcd web comic. It just spoke to me somehow. Whenever I'm not in a relationship, I want to be in a relationship. Then, when I'm in a relationship, I invariably want out, or at least my own space. It's very frustrating.

I will look up Pattern Language. I just noticed the fractal and the golden ratio (I think) between the two largest circles.

22. I was SO addicted to that show when it first aired
I think it was a summer replacement show, or they ran reruns in the summer, when I was in grad school in Boston. I had moved into my own apartment (at great personal expense just to NEVER. HAVE. ROOMMATES. AGAIN.) and because I had just broken up with my boyfriend, I was a bit lonely. I remember sweltering in my dark-paneled, shag-rugged studio, watching my teeny-tiny radio/tv up close. I was channel surfing--passed NE by, thought "What was THAT!" and immediately went back. I was hooked from that moment. Never missed an ep after that.

I have the two music CDs but not the DVD set. Want--even if they did screw up some of the music.

I wanted be Maggie. And I wanted to marry Chris. :loveya:

8. Northern Exposure fixes almost everything
I think I'll ask for the DVD box set for Christmas if I don't just buy it sooner. It's a shame about the music though.

11. don't DO that
What do you mean "It's a shame about the music"? What's up with the music?

The NE dvd's and cd's are the only stable thing in my entire life... you're freaking me out man! ARGH!

Wait... do you mean that more of the music wasn't recorded?

One of my favorites is Lay My Love (or something like that).

12. the background music on the DVDs isn't what was on the show
it's pretty obvious if you either remember the shows when they first aired, or are looking out for it. They didn't want to pay to license the music for the DVD release (it's the same as the show on the videos), and just put in this generic background music that's not really mixed well, wasn't made for the episodes, and doesn't really fit. It's the same background music on multiple episodes - it really destroys some otherwise beautiful moments on the show for me. Alas, video is a pain and is going nowhere, and I don't think we'll see a proper DVD release for several decades, so I'll just have to deal.

So no "At Last" by Etta James?

This is what's kept me from buying the WKRP DVDs.

15. the dance scene - yes
When Joel has Maggie dance with him at the very end of the episode when Rick was killed by the satellite, they are dancing to "At Last".

I never saw NE when it was on television except for a couple of times at my sister's house. My tv caught on fire and burned up in 1982 and I decided to not replace it. I bought a portable dvd player a couple of years ago and buy movies to watch, and of course, every single NE dvd they've put out. For someone who does not watch tv, it's bizarre how much I've connected to NE.

I wish I could see the shows with the original music, I'm sure there is quite another dimension to it.

20. some important things were kept
Most, if not all, of what the Chris character played on the radio show is the same, but it's things like the background music that's played when people are talking, driving, etc. that's changed. Maybe I don't mind that it's been changed as much as I mind that it's bad and noticeable. I guess you haven't noticed though, so it can't be so bad.
